For the past eight months, my good friend, Justin has been going through an extremely challenging time, which is causing an undue hardship. Justin’s mom was recently hospitalized. She can no longer provide care for him as she was his primary caregiver. As a result, there has been a loss of income that Justin needs to survive in order to live independently.
Justin was born with Becker Muscular Dystrophy (BMD). It is a genetic, degenerative muscular dystrophy. It wasn’t until his 30s that he learned his true diagnosis. His life is anything but simple, yet simple things can make a huge difference. Due to his disability, Justin requires in-home care. Staff shortages and the increased associated medical and living costs have made it difficult to find an outside caregiver who can assist on weekday and weekend evenings. When there is no one to help, Justin has to stay and sleep in his power wheelchair. This has been causing severe swelling and pain, pressure sores on his legs, lack of sleep, and an immeasurable amount of stress, in addition to lacking much needed financial resources.
Throughout living with a progressive disability, Justin earned a B.A. in Communications at DePaul University and is a disabled artist. He volunteers by serving on multiple arts and disability committees, and advocates fiercely for disability rights, and racial and social justice. Justin is an active member of his community. He has made a difference in society. Justin’s smile lights up the world. His heart and spirit radiate love. He is also a loyal, loving friend who is always there for others and his community no matter what.
Funds raised will cover six months of basic needs, such as rent to maintain wheelchair accessible housing, overdue balances so monthly expenses can be decreased, food, medical needs and in-home care, and transportation. All limited social service resources have been exhausted. Due to his disability, Justin is unable to work a traditional full-time job. Living independently with assistance is more economical than any kind of facility.
Justin rarely asks for anything. Right now, he needs our help to get through this challenging time. We CAN make a difference in his life right now as he has for so many.
Let’s bring Justin some holiday magic, love, peace of mind, and financial support to assist him through this hardship to help restore faith and hope.
