Gavin's Eagle Scout Project
My name is Gavin Costello and I am a Boy Scout with Troop 129. I am a lifetime North Plainfield resident, currently attending Somerset County Vocational and Technical high school where I am an Honor Student enrolled in the Welding program. I am employed at Texas Roadhouse and participate in a local roller hockey league, Green Brook Hockey Club.
As a Boy Scout, the highest rank awarded by the organization is that of Eagle Scout. One of the requirements to attain this rank is to complete a service project that benefits your local community. For several years, I volunteered several hours per week at the North Plainfield Public Library. As an avid reader and library user, it has been an important place to me. I have decided to dedicate my project to bettering the library by landscaping a troublesome spot at the front entrance.
The current landscaping has become dull and worn out. It is unkempt and unappealing. My plan is to beautify the area by enlarging the current plant bed and putting in several new and colorful plants to brighten the area. I will construct a small, bluestone path that will encourage people to avoid walking through the flower bed and destroying the landscaping – which has become a significant problem for that area. There are several memorial benches that will be moved to better showcase them and to better serve waiting patrons. The area is adjacent to a war memorial, and it is my hope that this area will highlight that feature in a better manner.
Many North Plainfield residents access the internet in our library, receive English lessons and can be assisted accessing social services. The library runs programs for youth and adults alike. I am also seeking donations from local businesses. Supporting the local library is a worthy endeavor.
