Healthcare for "Geno" Haeg
Donation protected
Lifelong North Idaho resident, Gene Haeg, is nearing his final days. Husband for 56 years to Dixie, Gene is coping with end-stage dementia. For the last several years, Gene has gradually lost bits of his mental and physical functions. Six years ago, Gene had to quit working at his convience store, which he had owned and operated for over 50 years. As a small business owner, he worked incredibly hard for most of his life. He loved going to work and regularly worked 10-12+ hour days. He put his heart and soul into his business and his relationship with his customers. For a few years, since steping away from the operation of the store, the Haegs have rented it out. This had been bringing in a small amount of income to help with their retirement needs. Last month, the renters moved out, and the business is now empty.
Dixie has been his primary caregiver, keeping his every need met. She has waited on him, bathed him, gotten him to and from his chair to his bed daily, and has had to change his undergarmets, as his bathroom functions are gone. As dedicated as she has been, it has been a hard struggle. With the loss of income from the store coming during a critical time for Gene's care, the family would like to help get an assistant for Dixie.
It is his wish, as well as the family's wish, to keep him in his home as much and as long as possible. As mixed up as he sometimes is, he knows he wants to be home. People suffering from end-stage dementia are more secure and comfortable in a setting that is familiar to them. Gene has lived in his current residence for over 50 years. The family hopes to keep him feeling safe, comfortable, and loved as he makes peace with letting go.
The average cost in Idaho for home healthcare is $18/hour. Gene has touched many people's lives and if several donated just one hour of care, it would relieve the family in more ways than one. Gene has been beloved in the community of St. Maries. His family is so thankful for the love and outpouring of support and offers to help. Thank you for honoring our very special "Geno."
