How this all started...

On Tuesday, Aug. 25th Rio took the Ducati out for a practice ride in the Acme Shopping Center parking lot.

Dad had taken him out a number of times and he was doing well so he told him he could practice in the parking lot on his own now as they wanted to go on a ride together before the weather changed.

Rio did well with his riding in the parking lot and then apparently realized he was running late for an appt. and decided to take the bike.

On the way, he stayed off the main roads (he was only going a couple of blocks down Princeton Pike).

We don't know exactly how it happened but it seems that turning right off Birchwood onto Darrah Ln he lost control and crossed the road and hit the curb on the north side of Darrah Lane.

From there, he crossed the driveway and hit a small tree in the front yard of a house there.

Fortunately, he was wearing a good helmet, because it was cracked, but protected his head.

The impact caused compression of his spinal cord in the C3-C6 area and some other relatively minor injuries.

There were a number of witnesses and we were very lucky to have the most excellent Lawrence Township EMS crew, Volunteer Fire Dept. and Police all respond to the call and get Rio immobilized and transported to the Capital Health Trauma Center in Trenton within minutes of the accident.

Our understanding is that Rio never fully lost consciousness during all this, though he wasn't quite making sense at first. Nevertheless, by the time they made it to the hospital, he'd made an impression on the rescue squad and they've been checking up on him since.

In the ER, he was assessed and went into surgery to relieve the pressure on his spinal cord (decompression and fusion).

The surgery went well and he was transferred to the ICU within hours of arriving at the hospital and we were able to talk to him that night.

From that point on, we've been working with the awesome crew at the North Neurological Intensive Care Unit to stabilize his medical condition and get him on the road to rehabilitation.
