Help Grandma Honeman
Many of you know our Grandma. Grandma Jo, Grandma Ho, Bebo Jo. She's turning 92 in January, still lives alone in Des Plaines, IL and has outlived 2 husbands, 3 children and many friends. She spends her days at the Y, baking cookies and recently spent many years taking care of her old boss, Gene, who passed away from ALS a few years ago.
She recently confided in us that she thinks she got scammed. A few months ago, she got a phone call from someone from a company claiming to be American Publisher's Clearinghouse. They told her that she has won over $200 million, but she has to pay the taxes before they can send the money. She went ahead and took a cash advance from her credit card and sent the money via MoneyGram. Not satisfied, they continued calling asking for more and more money. Unfortunately, she sent it.
One way they tricked her is they called up her credit card and made a payment claiming they were a friend (ranging from $3,000 - $8,500) and had her immediately take another advance to send to them, which, unfortunately she did.
She has gone from $0 debt to $22k in credit cards and unsecured loans. Her liquid accounts have gone down from $10k to under $300. She will now barely be able to make her monthly payments, let alone get Christmas gifts for her many great grandkids.
I know it's hard to believe that someone would fall for this. We are all baffled. But, we want to do what we can to help. Hopefully you can, too. Any little bit would help and all the Honemans will be in your debt!
We are not putting this out there only to ask for help with her financial situation but also to let everyone know that this can happen to anyone. Please remind your loved ones not to fall for these scams and if they have it's OK to ask for help!!
Thank you for reading. XO
