Gustavo urgently needs a lung transplant
GUSTAVO is 43 years old, a medical doctor happily married to Violeta and dreaming of having children.
He is a unique beloved, full of light, compassion, kindness, great friend, brilliant mind, best friend that people can find and warmest heart with the most beautiful smile ever.
When Gustavo was 15 years old, he was diagnosed with bladder cancer, of the rabdomiosarcoma type. He was treated at the St Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, TN. At that time Gustavo's treatment was entirely funded by the Hospital. The cancer has disappeared since then. He focused his life to become a medicine doctor and help others as he was helped.
A few years after the treatment, Gustavo started with sporadic pneumothoraces and showed some lung deterioration (not cancer), towards 2002 his surgeon at the St Jude's decided to remove the 2 upper lobes of his right lung.
Since then his lungs gradually deteriorated according to doctors "like a fibrosis" but not diagnosed as such. Gustavo used to have a very good sporty healthy life anyway after this surgery.
Over the past 1.5 months his lungs performance started to deteriorate much faster than usual. Therefore, he was admitted at the Hospital Español in Mexico City (where he lives and works). 3 weeks ago, he had severe breathing difficulties and was intubated and since then connected to a mechanical ventilator in the ICU.
Last week the doctors told us that his lungs function was declining much more than expected and that he needs an urgent lung transplant but that he was very critical to make it.
His only hope was to connect him to an ECMO machine to keep him alive. On June 10th he got connected to the ECMO and got stable enough to airlift him to wherever is needed to get him a lung transplant.
Gustavo's organs are in perfect condition with the exception of the lungs.
All this will be very costly and we need your support. We (his family and friends) will be forever grateful.
Below is a quick overview of the costs that we know until now:
-ECMO machine cost stands between 5.000 to 10.000 usd daily depending on the Hospital.
-Transplant cost estimated in 650.000 usd
-Air transport of the patient 100.000 usd per flight.
- Intensive Care Unit & Rehabilitation
-Medication
-Accommodation, transportation, food.
-Other costs not contemplated.

Gus tiene 43 años, es doctor en Medicina, está felizmente casado con Violeta y sueña con tener hijos.
Es único, lleno de luz y vive siempre para dar luz al prójimo, compasión, amabilidad, un amigo único, con el corazón más cálido y con la sonrisa más hermosa que jamás haya existido.
Debido a un tratamiento recibido a sus 15 años para tratarse de cáncer, sus pulmones se han deteriorado en los últimos años, generando un tipo de fibrosis que le provocó dificultad para respirar en el día a día.
En el último mes su situación empeoró y ha sido hospitalizado e intubado en cuidados intensivos (CTI). Hoy está conectado a una máquina ECMO que sustituye la función de sus pulmones debido a que los mismos no están funcionando. Esto no deja otra alternativa que un trasplante de pulmón.
