Aiutatemi a salvare mamma dal glioblastoma

Ciao, mi chiamo Lorenzo, ho 32 anni e vivo in Italia. Per favore prenditi un minuto per ascoltare la nostra storia.

Sono profondamente addolorato e deluso dal fatto che questa situazione che sto vivendo sia la stessa con cui molte famiglie debbano convivere: a nessuno dovrebbe mai essere detto di arrendersi, soprattutto quando qualcosa può essere fatto.

Nonostante una vita di fatiche, mia madre Patrizia, 61 anni, non mi ha mai fatto mancare nulla, e la mia speranza per lei era di farle trascorrere serenamente la pensione, dopo 40 anni di sacrifici.

Le speranze si sono infrante a Dicembre 2022, quando a mia madre è stato diagnosticato un Glioblastoma Multiforme di quarto grado, un tumore maligno del cervello, 11 mesi prima del pensionamento.

La vita di mia madre non è mai stata facile. Mi ha cresciuto da sola, da quando avevo 5 anni, e nonostante un brutto divorzio e una situazione economica difficile, ha fatto mille sacrifici per crescermi bene.

Quando le è stato diagnosticato il cancro, ho capito subito che sarei stato pronto a trovare ogni strada disponibile, proprio come lei ha fatto con me.

I medici hanno deciso di operarla. Rimozione solo parziale a causa della posizione del tumore in aree sensibili. Ed è così che ci hanno mandato a un giro di radioterapia e chemioterapia palliative, che probabilmente avrebbe dato a mia madre qualche mese di vita.

Per me, questo era inaccettabile.

Così ho deciso di provare a trovare un neurochirurgo che la operasse nuovamente, questa volta cercando di rimuovere quanto più tumore possibile. Sono stato fortunato a conoscere il Prof. D'Andrea Giancarlo, primario dell'ospedale Spaziani di Frosinone, che è riuscito ad eseguire una resezione totale del tumore, dandoci nuove speranze.

Il 20 Marzo 2023 mia madre ha iniziato il Protocollo Stupp, ciclo di radiochemioterapia che ha concluso il 19 Maggio 2023. Il recupero è stato senza dubbio la cosa più difficile che mia madre ha dovuto affrontare. Fisicamente e psicologicamente.

Ma come potete vedere nella foto qui sotto, è riuscita comunque a regalarci un sorriso.

Mia madre non si arrende, non l'ha mai fatto. Il suo stato di salute, l'età e l'intervento chirurgico di successo significano che ha fattori realistici e significativi dal punto di vista medico per sostenere i prossimi trattamenti.

Oltre il 50% dei pazienti con Glioblastoma Multiforme muore entro i primi due anni dalla diagnosi. Tuttavia, ci sono incredibili storie di sopravvivenza, come Ben Williams, che è ancora vivo 27 anni dopo la sua diagnosi.

Non mi faccio illusioni, queste storie di successo sono poche, ma ci dicono che molti trattamenti sono disponibili e possono regalare qualche anno di vita in più, e nel più remoto dei casi, il 5%, possono indurre il tumore a non ripresentarsi per oltre 5 anni.

Di seguito sono riportati i trattamenti che stiamo considerando, insieme ai relativi costi:

• Dispositivo Optune della Novocure. Un dispositivo che utilizza i TTfields, impulsi elettrici costanti a bassa intensità che impediscono il proliferare della malattia. Costo 92.000€ circa. https://www.optune.com/

• IOZK Clinic treatment. Una clinica privata con sede a Colonia in Germania, dove eseguono l'immunoterapia basata su un vaccino sviluppato a partire dalle cellule dendritiche del paziente a cui viene insegnato come attaccare lo specifico tumore. Costo 80.000€ circa. https://www.iozk.de/en/

• Protocollo Sperimentale CUSP9v3. 9 farmaci usati contemporaneamente per combattere la capacità delle cellule del Glioblastoma di adattarsi e mutare. Costo 2.500€ al mese circa. https://www.glioblastomamultiforme.it/en/the-cusp9v3-clinical-trial-to-fight-glioblastoma/

• Ipertermia Oncologica. Trattamento terapeutico che consiste nell'aumento mirato della temperatura della parte malata dell'organismo, in base a dimensione e localizzazione del tumore. Come potete vedere questi protocolli molto costosi e difficili da ottenere. Sto facendo tutto ciò che è in mio potere per trovare i fondi per poter accedere a queste cure, ma attualmente sono disoccupato per poter assistere mia madre, che ha una emiparesi sinistra causata dal cancro.

Per questo ti chiedo un aiuto per darle quello che da solo io non posso. Lei merita di avere più tempo, ma non può averlo.

Qualsiasi cosa tu possa donare, anche la più piccola somma, contribuirà a prove e studi cruciali per questo cancro tragicamente sottotrattato.

Hello, my name is Lorenzo, I am 32 years old, and I live in Italy. Please take a minute to listen to our story.

I am deeply saddened and disappointed that this situation that I am experiencing is what many families must live with: no one should ever be told to give up, especially when something can be done.

Despite a lifetime of effort, my 61-year-old mother Patrizia never made me want for anything, and my hope for her was to let her spend her retirement peacefully, after 40 years of sacrifices.

Hopes were dashed in December of last year when my mother was diagnosed with Grade 4 Glioblastoma Multiforme, a malignant brain cancer, 11 months to retirement.

My mother's life has never been easy. She raised me by herself, since I was 5 years old, and despite a bad divorce and a difficult economic situation, she made a thousand sacrifices to raise me well.

When she was diagnosed with cancer, I knew right away that I would be ready to find every available way, just like she did for me.

The doctors decided to operate on her. Only partial removal due to the location of the tumor in sensitive areas. And that's how they sent us on a round of palliative radiation and chemotherapy, which probably would have given my mother a few months to live.

For me, this was unacceptable.

So I decided to try to find a neurosurgeon who would operate on her, trying to remove as much tumor as possible.

I was lucky to know Prof. D'Andrea Giancarlo, chief physician of the Spaziani hospital in Frosinone, who managed to perform a total resection of the tumor, giving us new hope.

On 20 March 2023 he began the Stupp Protocol, a cycle of radiochemotherapy which he concluded on 19 May 2023. Recovery was without a doubt the hardest thing my mother had to go through. Physically and psychologically.

But as you can see in the photo below, she still managed to give us a smile.

My mother doesn't give up, she never did. Her health status, age, and successful surgery mean she has realistic and medically significant factors to support these treatments.

Over 50% of patients with Glioblastoma Multiforme die within the first two years of diagnosis. However, there are amazing survival stories, like Ben Williams, that is still alive 27 years after his diagnosis.

I have no illusions, these success stories are few, but they tell us that many treatments are available and they can be be performed to extend life expectancy by a few years, and in the most remote of cases, 5%, can cause the tumor not to recur for more than 5 years.

Below are the treatments we are considering, along with their costs:

• Novocure Optune. A device that uses TTfields, constant low-intensity electrical impulses that prevent the proliferation of the disease. Cost around 92.000€. https://www.optune.com/

• Oncological Hyperthermia. Therapeutic treatment which consists in the targeted increase in the temperature of the diseased part of the body, based on the size and location of the tumor. These protocols are very expensive and hard to get. I am doing everything in my power to raise the funds to access these treatments, but I am currently unemployed because i have to assist my mother, who unfortunately has left hemiparesis caused by cancer.

That's why I am asking for your help to give her what I can't do on my own. She deserves to have more time, but she can't have it.
