Hispaniola Medical Charity was founded by Dr. Bert Hart, Laura Hart, and Dr. Dennis Gore in the winter of 2012 to support the impoverished people of the island of Hispaniola (Dominican Republic and Haiti). The main focus of the charity is to provide locals with access to surgeries that are considered elective, that the public hospitals do not have the funding to support. This includes operations such as cataracts, dental work and many other types of surgery depending upon the team of physicians that are able to attend.
Since their inaugural mission in 2012, HMC has returned to the Dominican Republic 3 times, performed over 600 surgeries total, and used every extra cent that they’ve earned to provide the public hospitals with much needed equipment.
The next plan of the charity is to begin renovations of the public hospital and reach more patients. Therefore, the they need to keep bringing in donations and volunteers. This documentary seeks to aid in their development.
We plan to take a documentary team of 3, along with their team of doctors, nurses, and interns to capture the story of the work of the charity, and the ways in which it has impacted the community. Daniela Hart, Amanda Black and Anthony Ricciardi are three New York based artists planning to bring their combined skills to the DR for filming. Daniela is a producer for live action content for video games as well as a Resident Director at The Flea Theatre. Anthony will be bringing his comprehensive DP experience to the project and Amanda’s extensive background in the use of documentary as a tool for social change, will serve to structure the development of the research and filming.
The project has been budgeted at as low a rate as possible, and all labor is voluntary. However, there is still a need for funds for equipment rental, flights, and room & board for the week -long stay. To date, we are in the final stages of fundraising- we have covered the travel expenses and now want to make a final push in the two weeks before we begin filming! If in anyway you are able to contribute towards the telling of this story, we would be extremely grateful.
