WHY?
As a trans woman of color myself, I’ve experienced the many foundational and ingrained prejudices that come with being transgender, queer, and brown. Housing insecurity, as well as a feeling of loneliness, and definitely a lack of material resources is something that I have overwhelmingly witnessed in my community. With the amazing support of our community, The House of Resilience aims to be a hub for trans women, trans, nonbinary, and GNC folks. We strive to provide folx in our community with actual material aid.
Our mission is to uplift the LGBTQ+ communities of San Diego and Tijuana while putting a focus on creating a safer more equitable community for transgender women.
WHAT DO YOU OFFER TO THE COMMUNITY?
The current services that we are actively providing are:
The Femmily - A support group, and virtual space where trans women, transfem folx, and those questioning can be part of a community of amazing, and supportive people!
Sappho's Cafe - A physical and permanent community safe space In Tijuana, Mexico. Sappho's Cafe not only acts as a trans work program, where we offer at-risk community members jobs; but Sappho's is also Tijuana's FIRST sober trans + queer safe space! Future plans include expanding our Sappho's Program to San Diego(with your support!)
Referrals - Referrals and database of various services that exist to help trans folx. Our most common and popular referrals are for Medical Advocacy, Work Discrimination, and Name and Gender Changes. Due to our experience and years in the community, we've learned a lot about the trans-affirming services offered.
Advocacy - We use our public platform, as well as our social capital to garner public support for or recommendation of a particular cause or policy that will assist our community. Examples include promoting the 2022 Transgender Survey and making institutions like health insurance companies aware of our numerous hurdles to accessing gender-affirming care, so that we may make impacts on policies and legislation.
Community Events - We frequently throw free community events where trans folx can be together in the community. Some of our events have been, Trans Girl Movie Night, Free Shopping Day, QT Social, and more!
Training & Workshops - We currently offer our transgender and GNC 101 course! Available to organizations, schools, and businesses that want to learn more about trans people, affirming vocabulary, the current legal landscape for trans folx, and how to assist or make trans folx in your space more comfortable, safe, and affirmed!
Services we offer, but are currently inactive and dependent on community donations are:
Microgrants - Cash Microgrants, available to Trans women of color who are in dire need, houseless, or without vital services. Dependent on Donations and organization income.
Free, Gender-Affirming Clothing - When stocked back up, come visit our community closet, filled with the community's best-handpicked donations, because trans people deserve gender-affirming clothing!
HOW?
The House of Resilience is requesting to raise money to pay for our operating costs, costs of events, and our programming. With this monetary support, we can do things like help our community access programs where we can help our clients legally change their name, get on HRT(Hormone Replacement Therapy), and even more, all for a free or low cost. Our long-term plan is to establish our non-profit where we can eventually purchase a property(or properties) where we can grow and continue our mission, as well as do things like expanding our services to include a similar program for trans men and nonbinary folx. The House of Resilience also currently sends out cash microgrants to women of color, holds community workshops and drives; and frequently collaborates with community businesses and organizations!
THANK YOU
With your support, we can directly change the trajectory and uplift the lives of multiple transgender women of color, who are among the most discriminated community in our modern world. By making this a reality, you not only are responsible for assisting these amazing women but also show that this kind of project is not only wanted but needed!
