Happy Valentines Day!
I returned from Peru and quickly began my new position as a Nurse Practitioner at New York - Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center. These past few weeks have been exhilarating, fun, and challenging as I expand upon my clinical knowledge and practice.
Thank you for your support and generous donations towards my international clinical elective. I would like to share with you pictures from my trip and information on how I spent my time at the clinic.
Wanchaq Clinic
The clinical site was in the Wanchaq District, which is one of eight districts of the province Cusco, Peru. The population of Wanchaq is estimated at 54,000. The majority of patients seen at the clinic were day laborers and street vendors. In addition, a significant amount of the patient population travels from the surrounding rural provinces and speak Quechua, the indigenous language of the central Andes of South America.
Week 1:
The first week of clinical was spent in the Pediatric Clinic also know as “well baby visits”. These appointments mainly consist of vaccinations, nutrition counseling, monitoring of developmental milestones and growth. In addition to the routine vaccinations, we also administered malaria and TB vaccinations. It was a week of happy, healthy, chubby babies!
Week 2:
The second week of clinical I was assigned to “Tipico”, also know as Urgent Care in the United States. Tipico patients were often adults with hypertension, upper respiratory infections, lacerations, burns, and dog bites (hundreds of stray dogs = many dog bites). The clinic did not have a critical care area, therefore if a patient need surgery or cardiac monitoring they would be sent to the main hospital in Cusco. However, the clinic did mange most post surgery follow-up complications. As a medical volunteer I sutured, administered medications, performed health assessments and ordered diagnostic testing.

Lastly, who can visit Peru and not Machu Picchu?!
My colleague and I spent Christmas Day in Machu Picchu. We started our 4:30AM hike from Aguas Calientes and after 3 hours arrived at Wayna Picchu. It was increíble, magnífica, hermosa!

Dear family and friends,
I am very excited to share that I have accepted a Nurse Practitioner position at New York Presbyterian Weill Cornell Hospital in the Emergency Department. I will be participating in a 14 month residency program beginning this winter. As part of the residency program I will rotate through multiple medical disciplines including the medical intensive care unit, dermatology, ophthalmology, pediatrics, anesthesia, surgery, and radiology. In addition, the residency program allows for a two-week elective. I recently submitted a proposal to complete the two-week elective at an international site and…my proposal was approved!
I will be traveling to Cusco, Peru this December to work in a primary care clinic delivering medical care to low-income Peruvian families. My assigned clinical site averages 250 patients a day and treats a variety of medical needs including primary care, general medicine, pediatrics, and gynecology. I will be partnering with the non-profit organization IFRE, which coordinates clinical placement for international medical volunteers.
I am thrilled for the opportunity to participate in this international medical program and I believe it will be an invaluable experience. However, because this is considered an elective, none of the cost are covered by the residency program.
If possible, please consider donating toward the cost of transportation and program fees. The program fees include room and board, which are given directly to my Peruvian host family.
I am excited and motivated to began a new phase in my career as a Family Nurse Practitioner. I believe this international medical trip will provide me with the opportunity to learn and grow in my profession. Your support is much appreciated!
