Winter Feed Appeal

Donation protected
Fellow animal lovers, I need your help.  7 years ago with more heart than money I started taking in rescued farm animals on my 6 beautiful acres in a little town in southern Tasmania. I thought one or two cows would be fun but once you start helping word gets out and I could never turn an animal away. I work a full time job  M-F  and am happy to use my money to maintain my farm and take care of my 8 year old daughter and until now we have been ok. We had a very dry summer in Tassie and my hay yield will not be enough to see my animals through winter. I am mostly concerned with my gorgeous cows. Let me introduce you.

Ziggy- He started my love of cows. He is a rare white Scottish Highland Steer and after receiving a desperate call from a neighbour who was relocating and whose husband had already arranged Ziggy’s slaughter, became part of my sheep and chicken family. Well, he needed and friend so here came…

Bully- Bully, my big Black Angus steer was born on the ramp of the slaughterhouse as his mother was walking to her death. She must have tried very hard to give birth before her turn and just made it and I can only imagine her pain. He was taken in by a slaughterhouse worker only to be returned to the very same slaughterhouse to suffer the same fate as his mother once big enough.  A wonderful local sanctuary heard of his fate and intervened. He is a beautiful giant and is in charge of the rest of my herd. He is a gentle but firm patriarch. Soon after Bully arrived I received a desperate call from the sanctuary asking for a fully fenced safe place for my trouble maker, lone female cow….

Merry – Merry was born into a life as a dairy cow. Repeated inseminations and giving up her precious calves just after their birth so her milk could be collected. She is one of the lucky ones and found a kind soul who got her to the sanctuary. She came to me pregnant and a few months later her gorgeous boy was born as I looked on. So now we have …

Claude- Claude has only ever known love and kindness and is a spectacular boy. He tried for years with no luck to get old Bully to play and gallop trough the paddocks with him. He loves nothing more than a nap with his mother even though he is now 4 years old. He needed a younger buddy and then came…….

Clem- Clem a black and white gorgeous Friesian was a male born on a dairy farm and that is not a good thing. He was removed from his mother days after birth so her milk could be harvested. He was fortunate as the farm where he was born does not crate up their male calves for veal but I heard he needed me and was off. In the back of a van he made his journey to my ever expanding farm. He required bottle feeding as he was just a baby and we have developed a very special bond. We often lay for hours together in the paddock and he falls completely asleep in my lap. He only knows love and is getting to be a gentle giant. He is only 2 know but soon will tower over the others. He is pretty sure he is a dog so you have to be careful to stay safe while he cuddles!!!

So those are my cows. I also have 23 other various rescued farm animals, all from sad stories and some from very rough beginnings. The ones that came to me as babies lived in the house until they were healthy enough to be safe and warm and are completely sure they are dogs and still, although size prevents, try to come in the dog door.  A 5 year old Great Dane Mastiff set for euthanasia for no reason other than his owners did not want him due to his size, a released hand raised baby lorikeet who was found walking injured down the road, 2 sister turkeys named Nutmeg and Cinnamon and the most precious pig named Peppa who was dropped at my house on a Sunday to either been taken by me or off to be killed even though she was no bigger than a Chihuahua, are the latest to join my family. They join 3 orphaned sheep that were to be hit in the head with a hammer, 10 rescued battery hens, 3 amazing and brilliant pigs and a 14 year old cat rescued as a kitten from behind a restaurant in America.

I take full responsibility for my animals and know that they are mine to feed and protect and for 7 years this has been possible due to a good a

very fertile field, great grass and high hay yield. That all changed this summer and the grass was gone too soon and the hay was very poor. I am not the type to ask for help but this is not for me. This is for my cows. Without hay other farmers just slaughter their cows early or sell them off but that is NOT an option for me. I love each of the cows with all of my heart and couldn’t part with any of them. What I am asking for is just enough money to get through this winter with hay. I will continue to buy feed for the rest as I have done but hay is in high demand and the prices are astronomical. My cows are skinny for the first time ever and my heart is breaking.

Please help them IF you can. I know times are hard for everyone but any little bit would be so appreciated until I win the lottery and get to buy more land that can sustain my ever growing menagerie!!
