Helen Watkins Fire Recovery Fund

Donation protected

Our dear mother, friend, neighbor and grandmother lost her entire home and all of her cherished possessions to a fire on March 17, 2015. In that one terrifying night,  Helen watched her home and everything she owned go up in smoke.  When the flames broke through the sliding glass door where Helen was standing, the explosion burned her left arm, face,  leg and hip.  Despite the pain of these injuries, she was able to call the police and run door to door to warn her neighbors.  Finally, overcome with smoke, she was taken by ambulance to an area hospital where it was determined that she needed to be airlifted to the UC Davis Burn Unit. The three alarm fire caused damage to more than one hundred condo units in the building, with a total loss to three of the units, one of which was Helen's .
Due to the extensive damage to her unit and the entire building, Helen is still not back in her own home.  Since the repairs have just begun this month, it will be another 2-3 months, at least before she can start to rebuild her home and her life.
Due to the seriousness of her injuries, Helen's medical bills continue to pile up, and, although the cost to repair Helen's unit is being covered, she must personally incur all the costs to replace her furnishings and household items.
Additionally, Helen recently fell down a flight of stairs and fractured her leg, and is recovering in a rehabilitation center, adding even more to her medical bills.
Please help us raise money to get Helen back in her home and back on her feet.
