In June 2020, the course of my family’s life was dramatically, and, quite unexpectedly, changed forever when my 4 year old son, John, was diagnosed with Hepatoblastoma; a rare type of childhood liver cancer.
At the time of the initial diagnosis, we were living in Vero Beach, Florida, and had been traveling to Nemours Children’s Hospital in Orlando during the first weeks of blood tests, ultrasounds, x-rays, CAT scans, MRI’s and biopsy’s which revealed the brutal truth. The 100-mile round trip to Nemours was made many times thereafter for the first rounds of chemotherapy, uncontrolled nose bleeds, spiked fevers and emergency transfusions.
In August 2020, under the direction of John’s care team, we relocated to Massachusetts for further care at The Jimmy Fund Clinic at Boston’s Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, in preparation for a full liver transplant. Over the past three months, John has endured five rounds of chemotherapy (pre-op), numerous red-cell and platelet transfusions, an open thoracotomy, a full liver transplant and two additional rounds of chemotherapy (post-op).
We are so incredibly grateful for the medical expertise and compassionate care provided by every clinician and child-life expert along the way. We have been profoundly blessed by the outpouring of love and prayers for our family and John’s recovery. We are hopeful that his health will be fully restored and he will have a long and fulfilling life.
Like many families faced with a life-threatening illness, the reality of overwhelming medical expenses quickly sets in. Even with insurance, the remaining balances and additional costs for follow-up care, including life-long life-sustaining medications, far exceed personal resources.
