Help For Nancy Yerkes In-Home Recovery Care!
Donation protected
Our dear friend Nancy Yerkes, a long-time resident of Grand Rapids, is an artist, graphic designer, mother, grandmother, sister and central sounding board and supporter for many in the Arts and Music community throughout West Michigan. She is facing many challenges due to recent cancer surgery which resulted in a stroke, leaving her with limited mobility and speech problems. She has been working very hard in the rehab facility, but will need long-term home health care assistance when discharged to regain her independence and strength. Nancy has been a generous and giving friend to so many others, and needs our generous help now.
In Nancy's words....
Dear Friends,
On February 19th, I had surgery scheduled for a fast growing cancerous tumor discovered in my brain, just a few days before. I was told it that was self-contained, and easily accessible. I was prepared for a few days in the hospital, and given an excellent prognosis. During surgery, complications resulted, I'd had a stroke, and woke to the news. For the following 6 weeks, I was in rehab for my dysfunctional right side, which I couldn’t use, and speech therapy, for help learning to talk again. While there, I was dealt another blow, the cancer had also spread to my hip and femur and I needed surgery ASAP. Recovery required a higher level of therapy so (fortunately) I was moved to Mary Free Bed. I’m starting my fifth week, and will now be having 5 rounds of radiation done for my head and hip, with the hope to return home sometime around the 22nd of this month. I’ve learned that recovery takes time, and returning to my “normal” is a piece down the road with a lot effort. Although I chose to keep my physical and emotional mending to myself, a handful of close friends, and my sister, I’m starting to look forward reconnecting with life and moving forward. Linda Baker offered to do a crowd fund-raiser for me to cover the in-home care that I’ll need for the next couple of months. It’s hard to ask for help, but it’s the time, so thanks in advance Linda and friends for all you do, I see brighter days ahead.
Love,
Nancy
