Help Me Help Struggling Balinese Families During Covid19
The Devastation of Balinese Local Businesses Is Spiking an Epidemic Of Suicides, as Locals Strain to Survive Under Lockdown.
The Situation Continues to Escalate, Yet there is no LifeLine is in Sight for Locals who Have Families To Feed.
Known for their generosity, and hospitality, our Balinese friends have openly welcomed visitors to their homeland. Now it is not possible for anyone to travel, leaving many islanders in desperate need of help.
One heartbreaking case, this case is actually very close to my heart:
COVID-19 has caused My dear sister/friend Ibu Wayan and her family to lose their livelihood which depended entirely on tourism.
Last week she reached out to me in desperate need of help, she is now standing to lose everything she has, and she is the sole provider of a family of 6.
Ibu Wayan has done everything she could for the past 9 months to put food on the table
Ibu Wayan is not alone!!
Ibu is one of many mothers striving to feed their children,
Yet the reality is an overwhelming fear of when their last meal may be...
This is absolutely heartbreaking for me and the reason I need your help…
How I met Ibu Wayan
Ibu Wayan and I met in Bali back in 2010, where she came into the shop I was about to renovate and open. She had her little 4-year-old son André by her side, she was asking for a job, and I said YES. This was the first stepping stone into a deep friendship, built on trust and respect, that has been going on for more than 10 years now, and André basically grew up in the little store.
We helped each other grow not only in business but also in life. She was always ready to give me a belly rub if I was in pain, I was always there to listen to her when she had problems. We laughed together, shared stories about our lives, and got to know each other’s cultures.
She became like a sister to me.
I learned that she did not have an easy life, she grew up very poor and had to leave her home village to find a job in one of the bigger cities, Ubud.
One day I asked her: "What is your biggest dream in life? What would you do if everything was possible?" Her answer to me was simple and heartfelt: "I want my own shop Ibu Niki, so I can make enough money to send my son André to college."
And we made her dream come true.
First, she was my employee, then my business partner, and then she became the owner of her own shop in 2017 when she had gathered enough savings to pay the rent for the shop in full by herself. For the first time in her life, she was an independent woman, owner of her own shop, and with great possibilities to make a better life for her son and family.
My intention was always to leave her with a strong business that could support her and her family for years to come, BUT, because of COVID 19 she is about to lose it all, and I simply can’t let that happen.
