Please help local Malibu hero Steven Moak. When you hear the saying “Malibu Strong” they’re talking about people like him and his crews efforts throughout this disaster. As a third generation Malibu resident he put his life on hold to help save the community he could no longer afford to live in. Driving straight into the fire as a volunteer on the morning of November 9th he was able to put a small group of local residents together to take on the fire themselves due to the fact that firefighters were spread too thin and absolutely overwhelmed with the magnitude and speed of this blaze. Being an off duty forest firefighter and crew chief himself gave him the ability to put a strike team of volunteers together and attack the burn zone for 72 hours straight saving many homes on Point Dume and every house on the street he grew up on (Galahad).
If you were one of the fortunate ones that came home to see that your house survived thinking you just got lucky that wasn’t the case. It was thanks to Steve, Sam McGee and the Point Dume Bomberos! They saved your homes thanks to his instruction, wherewithal and work ethic. After the fire was mostly out around the PD area he continued to help outside law enforcement and firefighters in the community he loves for the next two weeks as he knew the area so well and had a pretty good idea of what was going on. After the two weeks of working around the clock he ended up back in the hospital with a throat that was swollen shut and was treated for toxic smoke inhalation. He had taken the last year off from firefighting due to two collapsed lungs and a heart attack sustained during the Napa Valley fires and five weeks later he fought the Thomas Fire for 21 days and spent Christmas & New Years on the fire line in Santa Barbara.
He’s now depleted his savings and has been forced to live out of his truck for the past few weeks and now his daughter has come to stay with him and he’s using the last of his money for hotel rooms during this holiday season. So let’s all join together and chip in some money for a local hero! He gave us everything he had and helped us in our greatest time of need out of the goodness in his heart and I feel it’s time we all give back!
Also, if anyone has any leads on affordable housing in or around Malibu please reach out! It would be a blessing for Steve to be back in the town he grew up in and helped save.
