Help Save Arlington's Donaldson Run Tributary B

Restoration plans call for raising the streambed and removing 80 plus trees.  Most of the trees visible in the photo including oaks and maples will be lost

Arlington is planning to “restore” Tributary B of Donaldson Run in 2021.  A major premise of the project is that raising and rechanneling the streambed will reduce soil and pollutants from reaching the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay.  But will it?   Stream and river specialists disagree with this approach.  Moreover, trees along the stream and trail will be removed to provide space for heavy equipment needed to construct the new channel.

Local residents have hired Dr. John Field to evaluate the County’s restoration plan before the stream is bulldozed and replaced with a re-engineered channel.  John is President of Field Geology Services, an independent consulting firm specializing in fluvial geomorphology (the study of the interactions between the physical shapes of rivers/streams, their water and sediment transport processes).  He brings years of experience and lessons learned to his work. He has walked the Tributary B trail and has identified modifications that would reduce loss of trees and overall project expenses.

During COVID-19, many of us have had an opportunity to enjoy the Donaldson Run Trail along Tributaries A and B.  Don’t miss this opportunity to help minimize the destruction of Tributary B and keep its natural beauty and biodiversity intact.

Time is of the essence. Please join us by contributing now.
