I Will Build a Robot to Play with the Dog.
When I teach humane education, one activity is a pretend shelter with photos of dogs and cats. A child can volunteer to pretend adopt a dog or cat of their choice. We then talk about why the animal is in the shelter and how the child might solve that particular problem. A fifth grader selected a young Husky named Crystal, who was surrendered to the shelter because Crystal had destroyed an entire sofa when she was left alone. When I asked him what he would do to solve that problem, he thought about it for a moment and said, “I would build a robot to play with Crystal while I am at school.”
Not only is it clever, it is a wonderful response because he had empathy for Crystal who was lonely and bored when left alone, and he then used problem solving skills to come up with a solution.
I do love going to the schools, almost as much as the children love watching videos with animals. Through fun educational videos, we can reach more children who will become pet advocates today and benevolent pet stewards tomorrow. While there may be robot dog nannies in our future, (and if there is, I met the inventor), our solution today is to teach kids how to be a HERO for our pets, so together we can curb pet overpopulation, end animal abuse, and teach kindness for all. We are circulating three scripts to humane educators and the Pasadena Humane Society for input. Our first three videos will teach children about spay/neuter, microchips, and animal shelters.
Our goal is $22,500, because that will give us the funds to make three videos! Our budget for each video is $7,500. We are thrilled that we raised over $5,000 to date -- some donors sent checks. Help us reach our goal! Please donate and share!
