Suicide kills close to 800,000 people every single year. That's 1 person taking their own life EVERY 40 SECS.
The statistics surrounding mental illness and suicide are terrifying, but what's even scarier is the fact that even though we're more aware and more educated than ever before, we're still not asking for help.
In fact, "I'm Fine" is one of the biggest and most common lies that we tell ourselves and each other on a daily basis.
I can relate.
I'm fine was what my Mum said to me just before she tried to take her life.
I'm fine was what I said right before I ended up in hospital.
I'm fine was what my Dad said as he drank himself to death.
And I'm fine were the last two words a mate sent via text message before he killed himself.
I want to inspire MORE people to have MORE conversations that could save MORE lives.
In August 2020, I'll be competing in The Mongol Derby, so i can do exactly that. But I need your help.
The Mongol Derby is one of the longest and toughest endurance races in the world. Based off the famous horse messenger system of Genghis Khan, the race spans 1000 kms across the Mongolian steppe and being thrown off a semi wild horse is only the start of the challenge. There is no support crew. The climate is unpredictable. The terrain is unforgiving. And the packs of wild dogs, well, they're hungry. It will be me against the wild.
My aim is to raise $100,000 for www.livin.org, the mental health charity I'm an ambassador for. We don't charge for school presentations or community events so funds raised will go towards ensuring we can continue to fund our travel to speak at schools, sports clubs and rural communities throughout Australia.
Everybody has a story. So please, when you read this, as hard as it may be - revisit yours.
I couldn't save my Mum from the prison of her own mind.
I couldn't save my Dad from the bottom of a bottle.
And I couldn't save my 15 year old self from trying to self destruct.
But I can use my story to try and save others. And so can you. Join my conversation and help me change the dialogue so I can help spread the word around the world that #itaintweaktospeak.
