Help For Heroes (OH) Needs Help
Hi there, my name is Tim and I am the organizer of this campaign. I did not know about the Help For Heroes charity until I came across an article in my local newspaper. The article did a very nice job of detailing all the great work being done by Charlie and her husband Mark for homeless veterans getting a fresh start. I was inspired by Charlie’s compassion and relentless dedication over the previous 7 years to make a difference - so I decided to follow her on her Facebook page.
Like many of us busy with jobs and daily life, I turned my attention back to the regular grind. Sixteen months later, in February 2019, I saw Charlie’s post on Facebook where she shared that after 8 years, she was going to have to shut down Help For Heroes due to the lack of financial support. I immediately started to research how to create a GoFundMe campaign and launched this page as quickly as possible.
Over the last 8 years, Charlie and her husband Mark have helped over 450 homeless veterans turn houses into homes. While the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs can help put roofs over the heads of these deserving veterans, they don’t have the funding to make the veterans feel at home. Many of these veterans have little to no money or resources to help them get acquainted in their new housing. That’s where Help For Heroes comes in!
In Charlie’s words, “The ultimate goal of Help For Heroes is to continue our mission as long as we possibly can and to ensure our veterans are off the floor, out of the dark, and able to prepare themselves a meal.”
Community donations provide Charlie and Mark with a starting place to turn an empty space into a home. Beyond the basics, Help For Heroes fills these homes with everything from couches, chairs, and televisions to bath towels, cooking utensils, and anything else they may need.
While furnishings are a bit easier to come by, Help For Heroes needs our financial support in order to continue the service. Current expenses include insurance, fuel, and upkeep for Charlie’s 1993 step van that is used to transport furnishings in addition to the monthly rent and insurance for storage units that keep all of the starter kit furnishings safe.
Please join me in supporting Charlie and Mark as they continue their mission to help these more than deserving veterans feel at home.
