I became interested in nutrition after a 6 month unpaid volunteer position at the World Health Organisation in Rwanda. To pursue this interest, I applied for and was accepted for a Nutrition for Global Health Msc degree at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine; one of the best public health institutions in the world!

Since I can remember, I have always had a passion for helping children. My family grew up in poverty in rural Kenya. Through their experiences, I gained first hand insight into the inequality of access to medical care, education and food facing children in developing countries. During my time at WHO, I also learnt about the importance of nutrition in the health and development of children under 5 years of age. Lack of food, both in quantity and quality, impacts the physical and cognitive development of children. Chronic (long term) malnutrition of children under 5 can cause stunting. Stunting is caused by a lack of access to food with nutrients that allow growth.

This has negative effects on their education attainment, health and growth. Because of the effect of stunting on cognitive development, it affects the IQ of children, and their growth of children into productive adults. If this problem isn’t dealt with, stunting can significantly halt the economic development of low income countries. 34 countries worldwide have high rates of stunting, 21 of these are in Africa.

For that reason, I would like to dedicate my career to finding solutions to stunting in these countries.

As you may know, studying and living in London is extremely expensive. For that reason I would like to request your support for my masters degree. Currently, I have saved some money, received support from family, written several letters for sponsorship, and applied for 4 bursaries from charities but I still need additional support.

The fees (£8,300) are to be paid in full by 29th September. Here is the breakdown below.

Total cost of course (course fees + living costs): £17,300
 Course cost: £8,300
 Living costs (rent, study materials, travel to central London): £9,000

How much do I have (bursaries included although not approved): £10,500
 Savings: £4,000
 Family support: £2,000
 Bursaries (applied for, not approved, will be received past fee deadline date): £4,500

How much do I need: £6,800
 Remaining fees: £2,300
 Living Cost: £4,500

How much am I asking for: £5,000 (£2,300 for fees, £2,700 living costs).

When am I hoping to raise it by:
 £2,300 by 29th September
 £2,700 by 30th October

With your support, I can pursue a degree which allows me to dedicate my career to making a difference to the lives of malnourished children all over Africa. In this age of plenty, it is a tragedy that any child should not have access to food. Help me pursue my dream to change this!
