Hospital Bills and Sick Pay for UTS Security Guard

UTS community and progressive people of faith; we are raising funds for two Union Theological Seminary security guards who have been denied paid sick days and healthcare for their entire time working at the most progressive seminary in the country. Sherwin Shambuger collapsed on the sidewalk in front of the seminary Tuesday night (3/22) while trying to come to work graveyard shift to make ends meet. While he is in the hospital, he will receive NO pay, when he is already living paycheck to paycheck. Sherwin was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes three weeks ago, after working as a security guard at UTS with no healthcare and no sick days for 10 years.
Charles Amankwa was hospitalized with COVID last year, and was out of work for an entire month. He did not receive a single dollar of sick pay during that month, and was unable to pay rent or buy groceries.

We are praying that the UTS administration will do the right thing and agree to living wages, full healthcare, sick days, and more---- but until then, we are coming together to raise funds to pay Sherwin and Charles the sick days they deserve. Sherwin, Charles, and their coworkers have bravely organized a union in order to fight for fair pay, healthcare, and working conditions.
