My name is Amy. I volunteer at St. Vincent de Paul for about two years now. Last January 11, 2016, I was approached by a fellow Vincentian from St. Ann Bartlett Conference to help do a fundraising for a replacement handicap van for "Jacqueline Salinas". Of course, my initial reaction was "no", but I agreed to meet with her that week. The rest was history. When I am around Jacqueline Salinas, I can feel God's presence and see God through her journey. So here we go:
"JACQUELINE SALINAS JOURNEY"
20 years ago, Jackie and her husband with their seven-year-old twins, Alejandro and Gabriela, 3-year-old daughter, Valentina, and 2-year-old son, Omar, came to Memphis from Bolivia. Gabriela had cancer and was being treated at St. Jude. The treatment was going well, but they needed to have some work done on their visas, so the family drove to Washington DC.
On the return trip, the family was involved in a fatal car accident near Brownsville, TN. Jackie’s husband, and daughter were killed in the car crash. As a result of the accident, Jackie was paralyzed. Jackie was pregnant at the time of the accident and she miraculously went on to deliver a healthy baby boy, named Danny Thomas.
Jackie has remained a paraplegic since the car accident but by the grace of God she and her children are doing well. Gabriela and her twin, Alejandro, have both graduated college, and Gabriela is at St Jude working and studying for her PhD. Omar is a Junior at Christian Brothers University and Danny Thomas is a Senior in high school.
Jackie received a handicap accessible van from PAX, a Catholic Spanish-language radio station in Miami, Florida. With almost 200,000 miles and many repair jobs, the 1996 Ford E150 has seen better days. In 2009, a group of four men, working with the church community, were able to give Jackie a “new to her” van. This vehicle became her wings. From her wheelchair she was able to help families that are going through heartbreaking suffering because of cancer, transporting them in her vehicle. She says that: "Nothing compares to the happiness that you feel when you see the smile on the face of a sick child when you give them your love."
Unfortunately, nothing lasts forever, and Jacqueline's vehicle started to fail. On December 2015, the van ceased to be in operating condition. The "wings" that transported her and had been the instrument to bring love and hope to those who needed them, broke forever. Therefore, Jackie is now totally isolated, unable to get to those who need her, unable to continue with her charitable work of love, which also give meaning and motivation to her life.
The St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Ann Church want to help Jackie in raising funds for another “new-to-her” van. She is in desperate need of a handicap van equipped with a lift for her wheelchair.
And this leads us to the local community who hopefully will find a way to help pay for the van for Jacqueline by making a donation to GoFundMe or St. Vincent de Paul Society.
