Doey's House in memory of James C. Wright

Ten months ago, our father, James (Jim) Wright was diagnosed with stage 4 small cell carcinoma. After many rounds of chemotherapy, radiation, and immunotherapy, his body became weak, and we found ourselves in a Hagerstown hospital facing the harsh reality that the end was near. Jim and our mother, Bernie Wright, had planned for what seemed to be every possibility. As fear and frustration set in a ray of hope emerged, Doey’s House Hospice.

Doey’s House welcomed Jim in with open arms.

Walking into Doey’s House for the first time we were greeted by kind faces and a feeling of home. The staff quickly whisked Dad away and made him comfortable in his own spacious room. As morning dawned that day, the sun shone through the large French doors that lead to his own patio.

Through that tough day we were met by many caring nurses and a wonderful doctor. Their empathy, grace, and kindness seemed almost angelic. Never too far or busy to help, always just far enough to give us our privacy.

Jim loved the outdoors; camping, fishing, boating, hiking, or just sharing the glow of a campfire with family and friends. On that last day the staff wheeled Dad and his whole bed outside onto his patio. As the sun fell upon him and the cool breeze kissed his face, although unable to open his eyes, his breathing changed, a calm came over him.

Dad passed later that night, but Doey’s House helped to fill his last day with good memories and peace. We are forever grateful for the facility and the staff that took us all in, loved us and let us focus on our love for Dad.
