On August 17th, 2023, my 3-year-old nephew, Jameson, became the victim of unfathomable child abuse, neglect, and torment inflicted by his perceived caretaker. While Jameson’s parents were working, they received the call that no parent ever expects or wants to hear.
Warning: Graphic content below!
Jameson endured horrendous pediatric burns at the most severe level. He was lured to the kitchen, where his babysitter submerged his little hands in boiling water more than once, while taunting and torturing him. The abuse continued for over a 30-minute period before his parents were notified that something was wrong. Jameson agonized while waiting to be rescued. The burns worsened as time passed, and he was rushed to the hospital upon his parents' and grandparents' arrival.
His parents had the foresight to previously install a concealed baby monitor, through which they learned the severity and truth of the situation. They have had an extremely difficult time viewing the videos and have asked family members to review the footage on their behalf because the pain of watching their baby suffer on camera has been excruciating to witness.
Jameson was taken to Renown Medical Center in Northern Nevada, where he received immediate care. Renown referred their family to Shriners Children’s Northern California/UC Davis. Shriners has been incredibly attentive and delivers the highest level of quality care that any family could hope for during such a tragedy.
Jameson underwent his first surgery four and a half days after the incident. He did very well, but we are not ignorant of potential adverse outcomes like loss of hand function, nerve damage, scarring, infections, and amputation.
He received a spinal block, in which they grafted skin from half of his back. It was applied to his left hand and wrist. The surgery aimed to repair muscle and nerve function, mobility, and cosmetic scarring.
It will take at least 6 weeks to learn the outcome from the recent surgery with skin grafts and back skin removal. We have been told that his skin graft is very uncomfortable, as it is equivalent to a severe rug burn.
Shriners has projected overall healing could be anywhere between 6 to 9 months, due to the high risk of infection that burn victims with severe injuries often face.
This is an ongoing investigation. The perpetrator is in custody, and the family has been advised not to disclose any details.
While we don’t fully understand the emotional and psychological impact or the trauma that hospitalization and burn victimization bring, our family remains faithful that goodness is being restored. Jameson and his parents are taking this process one moment at a time.
His parents are faced with quitting their jobs to devote every minute to their baby’s recovery through the unimaginable. They will need to relocate from Northern Nevada to Northern California immediately; cover the cost of ongoing bills; seek immediate and long-term family and individual psychological care; pursue long-term rehabilitation and potential surgeries; and address everyday necessities: food, gas, rent, and car payments.
This situation has changed everything about Jameson and his parents’ way of being. This family is placing all of their focus on getting young Jameson the medical care, healing, love, and rehabilitation he needs, and postponing their own emotional and mental health needs temporarily.
Although the devastation of this event hasn't been fully realized, Jameson’s family and friends are grateful that it wasn't worse.
We are humbly asking for financial assistance and pray for help at all levels for the family to address the various financial challenges associated with their relocation, aftercare, and substantial expenses that fall outside the scope of their health insurance coverage.
We are immensely grateful for the love, healing, and financial support, and every ounce of healing energy and every cent raised will make a lifetime of difference in offering this family a new beginning and giving Jameson new hands.
Please keep our beautiful boy in your prayers. Thank you for taking the time to read and share this story.
With deep gratitude,
Jameson’s Aunt, Jerri Lynn, and the family and friends of Baby Jameson
