Supporting our friends, Joe & Cory

Donación protegida
Our beloved Joe Torres, 45, passed away peacefully at his home in Richardson, TX on January 4th, 2016, surrounded by his husband, Cory Morrison, Mother-in-Law, Gaye Morrison and his yellow lab, Tucker. Born November 8, 1970 in Lamesa, TX to parents Pedro and Juana Reyna, (deceased). Joe was a truly special man, loved by all, whom were privileged to have shared his life. He was a devoted, loving and caring individual, whose calling in life was the care and advocacy of children. He established a career with Bright Horizons Family Solutions here in Dallas, where he became director and was highly regarded and respected for his work with the children and their families. Previously he worked with the YMCA, in their After School and Summer Camp Programs, in Austin, TX. During his time with the YMCA, he established many life-long friendships, that he cherished until his end.

Joe attended Southwest Texas State University, where he trained and studied in the field of Early Childhood Development. Joe was an avid fan of the University of Texas Football Team, loved watching the UT Women’s Volleyball Team and UT Basketball Teams. He love playing volleyball and played for the DIVA league in Dallas for many years.

Joe is survived by his loving husband, Cory Morrison and their beloved dog Tucker, who adored and guarded Joe until the end. Between Joe and Cory, they have a large extended family and many wonderful friends that love and nurture them and will miss Joe so very much.

Joe touched many lives during his brief time on earth. His teaching spirit will continue by his donation to the research of Cruetzfeldt-Jakob Disease. Joe will be remembered as the kind, generous and loving soul he was in life.

Most of us are unfamiliar with this devistating and  rare fatal degenerative disease of the central nervous system called, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.   Unfortunatly, many of us are learning more now.  It is the wish from Cory and Joe's survivors that we take some time to learn more.

The symtoms began in late June 2015 with restless nights, and the doctors treated him for sleep disorder, but the prescriptions were not effective.  Joe continued with this struggle for the next few months all while seeking additional help from his doctors.

On November 8th, we celebrated his birthday and enjoyed his bright smile, incredible heart felt laughter, warm heart that could fill any size room, and the demaded signature drink prepared by Joe himself, the Bloody Mary.  On this day, he was still struggling with restless nights, he had another visit with the doctor the week of November 8th.

Within the next couple of weeks, his body began to decline with imparied vision, involuntary movements, and memory loss.  The doctors struggled to find a diagnosis and concluded with Pure Motor Aphasia.  Within another two weeks, going into December 7th, and struggling through countless medical tests,  Joe's memory, abilty to speak in complete sentences, balance, and loss of muscle control has worsend.  Doctors were now suspecting Huntingtons Disease.

By December 16th, Joe was now in the hospital and we were all losing hope.  and now the doctors finally concluded that Joe had the rare fatal disease, Creutzfeldt-Jakob.  The doctors gave the unforgettable and unimaginable words of, "six months to a year."  The disease progressed much more rapidly than the doctors expected and faster than any of us can wrap our minds around.  Cory now made the decision to bring Joe into home for his final days were he could be resting among his family and friends.

Please take the time to visit this link to learn more about Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease.  Joe has granted the gift and donation of his tissue for future research on this uncommon, fatal disease.  We pray that his contribution will help doctors continue to learn, understand and help with answers as to why and how.

Many of you have asked how you can help.  We are all friends of one of the best, loving couples you'll ever come across, so we ask if you can make any contribution to help absorb the enourmous medical debt that has been created and continuing to grow.  The current debt is near $15,000 with medical and final arrangements, so your contribution would help Cory financially while he grieves this tragedy of his longtime partner and newlywed husband, Joe Torres.

Joe is survived by his extended family: (sisters): Maria Torrez, Victoria Rogers and husband, David Rogers, (cousins): Cynthia Mendez, Michelle Rodriguez, Fernando Mendez, John Mendez, Patricia Olszewski, and Ryan Rogers, along with their spouses and children. He is also survived by his mother and father-in-law, Bill and Gaye Morrison, brothers-in-law, Matthew and Kelly Morrison and numerous other family members.

A Celebration Service is scheduled for Saturday, January 16th at 2:30PM, at Restland Funeral Home, in the Memorial Chapel, located at 13005 Greenville Ave., Dallas, TX, 75243.
