LEG 14: Cairns to Darwin, Australia:

home of the Great Barrier Reef

Our purpose:  Working with University researchers, we aim to use Solutions based science to shift perceptions around ocean plastic and to build a community to help understand, then solve the ocean plastics problem.

If you love the ocean and it's threatened marine life, then this is your chance to do something about helping to fix the adverse human impact!

Every contribution counts!  All donations go directly toward this voyage and ocean plastics research, net of gofundme's small transaction fee.  I will be funding my own costs in transport and accommodation.

In October 2019, SV TravelEdge left Plymouth in the UK bound for her 2-year circumnavigation, visiting 4 of the 5 gyres of ocean plastic and the Arctic.  Its crew will be working hard to uncover exactly what, why and how plastic, microplastics, and toxins are getting into our oceans.  Until we have the data to understand and document this, it is not possible to solve the problem.  All participating crew have committed to fundraising to allow the voyage to take place.  The underlying goal is to build a community of like-minded souls, within each region of the world, to be part of the eXXpedition community.

The Facts:
* 8 million tonnes of plastic waste finds its way into the ocean each year!
* Only 9% of plastic is recycled globally!
* By 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish!
* Even biodegradable plastics do not breakdown in water!
* Toxins entering our waterways lead to toxins in our food chain!
* Many chemicals found in plastic have been linked to disease!
* Plastic debris is mistaken as food and entangles our marine life!

My voyage, Leg 14 from Cairns to Darwin will take data from the area surrounding one of the worlds 7 natural wonders - Australia's Great Barrier Reef.  It is under significant threat and community-based efforts are a critically important means of protecting it!  I need to contribute all funds by 17 April 2020.  in Australia, SV TravelEdge will depart Cairns in July 2020, and journey to Darwin and on to Perth.

Track the boat online via the website and get involved in the activities we will run and blogs we will post.  In Australia, citizen science volunteering is available via ausmap, ocean crusaders, and many other community organisations passionate about our waterways.

Thank you for choosing to support my contribution to fund the eXXpedition voyage!  I will work tirelessly in the lead up to the trip, challenging corporate circles and raising awareness.  Onboard, I will be learning and helping and sharing the amazing findings.  Afterwards, I will continue to educate and challenge those around me to be the change!

To know others share my passion and support my efforts is such a motivating force!  I won't let you down & I will be looking for ways to reward my supporters! Thank you! Jen
