Jenayah Nelums, a 38 year old human services assistant, was a beautiful, vibrant spirit who was cherished by her family and passionate about helping people with disabilities.  A dedicated wife to her high school sweetheart, Aaron, they had three boys affectionately nicknamed the "A-team”. Following Aaron's tradition, each boy's name begins with the letter A.  With much anticipation and excitement, Jenayah and Aaron were ready to welcome their fourth child during the pandemic. On December 12, 2020, despite being high risk, Jenayah’s delivered another healthy, beautiful baby boy. Overjoyed and surrounded by so much love, tragedy was the last thing this family expected. Jenayah experienced a birth complication at home after discharge and was readmitted.  Sadly, she passed away on 12/23/20 at Virtua Memorial Hospital in Mt. Holly NJ, just 11 days after giving birth.  The CDC says 60% of all maternal deaths are preventable. We believe this to be the case in Jenayah’s death.  We’d like to learn more about what exactly happened to Jenayah but her online patient portal was deactivated by the hospital preventing Aaron from logging in and he has had a hard time gaining access to her full medical record.

Jenayah LIVED! She enjoyed reading, helping people, dancing, and being a mother to her boys.  Though we lost a beautiful soul, Jenayah's legacy will live on through her children and through gift of organ & tissue donation.  Her selflessness will be able to provide the gift of life to over 50-100 people, including the restoration of sight of 2 individuals. She is terribly missed by her family.  Baby Asaan won’t have to chance to know his mother; he will learn about who she was by the recollections of his father and brothers, pictures and videos, and stories from others. After twenty-one years together, Aaron is suffering the loss of his wife, the mother of his four sons–an unimaginable pain becoming too common for Black families in the US. He abruptly became a single father with the incredible challenge to care for a newborn who needs his mother, and he continues to be the sole provider for his family.

Please donate and SHARE  this GoFundMe campaign to help support this family as they grieve an insurmountable loss. These funds will help to purchase much needed essentials including rent, utilities, baby items and other family expenses and go directly into the hands of Jenayah’s widower, Aaron Nelums. No donation is too small, and is always greatly appreciated. We hope to spread awareness about Jenayah’s story: her life, her family, her loss. Thank you for your support and well wishes to the Nelums family. Share her story and this GoFundMe with the hashtags #Justice4Jenayah #Jenayahshouldbehere
