Justice for Jahnai

Thursday (1/18) my friend Kelsey shared on Facebook that her 15 year old biracial son was brutally attacked [by three hostile young men who followed him as he and his friends were leaving a birthday party].
-
These men beat him in an unprovoked attack so that he needed to have an emergency reconstructive surgery — because they broke his jaw in three places (necessitating the removal of a destroyed tooth, including elaborate measures like hardware to pin and screw and wire his shattered jaw back together) — and that's the simplified description of the injuries and incomprehensible trauma he experienced (trauma I could not begin to personally imagine). [I just got an update from his mama that his jaw will need to be wired shut for at least the next 6 weeks while it heals!]
-
I have known Kelsey for four years. She is the amazing mother of five children (the youngest just turned one!), and it was her eldest son Jahnai who was attacked. [He is the tall one in the back in this photo with his family that was taken this past September (2017.) ]

This could be your son too. These incidents are tragically becoming increasingly common in the newly frenzied, violently divided raw powederkeg of a country we live in right now. Please help me share some love for this family.

This GoFundMe is to help with medical costs, dental work (additional jaw reconstruction if required), therapies, long-term unanticipated considerations, additional childcare to help mama care for him during this time, medical-related transportation costs, college fund, and whatever else they need!  [The campaign has been set up so that funds raised will go directly to the family.]

I too have a 15 year-old son, and we are Jewish [and my eldest boy, now just 21  is also biracial] — and despite their comparatively safe experience thus far, the ancetrally-imprinted fear of this new wave of historically cyclical horror — ginned-up, hate-fueled random, unprovoked spontaneous violent aggression against people identified as "other" resonates very close to home.
-
There is no room for violent hate crimes — against children, no less —  in our modern world. This is a tragedy beyond tragedy.
-
This appears to have been a race-related hate-crime. I hate to say this, but if this was a white child I imagine justice would be served quickly and severely and there would be quick action by the police and outrage in the public media. Instead there has not been a whisper.

Here also is an Amazon "wish list" link for Jahnai. The items on this list are games and toys and other things that will hopefully make his recovery period more comfortable and help him to pass the time. If you cannot donate on GoFundMe or cannot get him something from this list but would like to send him a card or something else personal, please message me. If you have ideas of other things to add to the wish-list that might ease his suffering (or other ways you think we can help them), please let me know that too! Thank you. http://amzn.to/2FXYhWb (aflink)
