"For me personally, reaching the goal of SCHOLARSHIP, means my parents will know that their beloved Kathryn will not be forgotten. "
Alison T Martin, sister
5 years later...
Brilliant, tenacious, beautiful, kind, fair...just a few words to describe my sister Kathryn. She was a proud "momma" of her two "boys", a loyal graduate of Va Tech and she was a honored journalist. She left us in the prime of her life at age 50 following a diagnosis of esophageal cancer.  Although cancer took her from us, her giving spirit lives within us all. Kate's family and friends wish to memorialize her spirit by raising funds for a scholarship to assist a student with reaching their professional potential. Our family was thrilled to hear from a former college mate of Kathryn's,"Hitting the $25K mark puts the KTL Fund into the "endowment" category at VT and allows the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences to begin spending the funds to support Communications/Journalism related programs and events to benefit students at Virginia Tech in the memory of our dear Kathryn".
Her friend went on to say, "Our next step -- start Phase 2 of our efforts to raise awareness and the funds to reach $50,000 and establish an annual scholarship program for high school seniors seeking to attend VT and focus on Communications as a major. Wow, how exciting is this for ALL of us".
My parents are so honored to know how much people care for Kathryn and our family. They so hope that we will meet our ultimate goal for a scholarship in Kathryn's name. Please help us to continue Kathryn's legacy of giving to others by donating to the KTL Memorial Excellence Fund.
GOAL: Finish Line 2017. Just over $30K so far.

Kathryn loved cardinals and had little touches of this beautiful bird in each room of her house. Kathryn's friend captured this picture on the morning of her passing.  She wrote,
"Maybe I'm just silly and reaching for comfort in                anything I can find, but as I was sitting in my living room thinking about Kate, listening to the birds chirp on a day that is dark for all of us, all the sudden a flock of cardinals flew in and perched themselves in the tree just off my balcony. I kind of lost my breath, and this one caught my eye because it was at    eye-level and seemed to be looking at me. Eventually all the others flew off in a matter of about a minute, but that one just sat there looking at me. So, I said hi to it. I figured it was Kate coming to check on me already. So, I told her to stay put, that I wanted to get a picture. As I ran for the camera, I expected the bird to be gone when I got back, but it was there. I was able to capture that moment. I like to believe she's   watching out for us all and that was her way of telling me she's ok. If it wasn't her, she sent me something to let me know she's ok."
