Imagine the following scenario. You are 80 years old. Your spouse has passed away and you live alone in your home of over 30 years with fond memories of time gone by. You have chronic pain, depression and other ailments that limit your function and quality of life. Your neighbor and friends help as they can. Enter the COVID 19 pandemic and your whole world is turned upside down as you are gripped by fear. Your neighbor can no longer come over for both their safety and yours. You literally have no one. Your rotary phone rings to remind you that you have an upcoming doctor visit... except they aren’t seeing patients in the office due to the risk of COVID10. You are told that you must do a ‘telehealth’ visit that requires the use of a cell phone or a computer with a camera. A tear rolls down your face as you look down at the round dial on your phone. “I don’t have that. I only have a house phone” you somehow are able to say. The kind staff member responds, “Do you have a family member or friend who does? This will help the doctor to see your face and talk to you so you don’t have to come in”. You oddly feel ashamed, realizing that the technology of so-called ‘smartphones’ and computers has created an entire new world of staying ‘connected’; one of which you have no knowledge of, nor desire to learn. You tell the voice on the other end, “Never mind, I will just skip my appointment. I will be OK without my medicine for a few weeks until this virus goes away.”
This situation is very real and occurring regularly across the US. Statistics and reports have been frightening. Patients are foregoing critical health care at an alarming rate for serious medical conditions, untreated depression and other psychiatric complaints; in part due to fear of contracting COVID19, and also due to the complexity of telehealth visits for those patients who lack the technology. This fallout from untreated medical illness is magnifying the loss of lives due to COVID19. Absolutely no one should have to do without medications or medical treatment because they do not have access to a smartphone or computer. In addition, it is critical that seniors STAY HOME as much as possible and avoid social interaction and public gatherings due to the high risk of contracting COVID19. However, this should not mean that they feel alone.
This is where NovaHope Foundation is going to help save lives and keep seniors connected! We want to get as many FREE smartphones as possible into the hands of our seniors who only have a landline or no access to the internet. And there are A LOT OF THEM! Many simply do not like or want to learn this technology! We will get them FULLY REGISTERED phones with UNLIMITED CALLING, DATA, and TEXT for at least the next 3 months... or however long is necessary to KEEP THEM SAFE! We will issue the phone to them and teach them how to use it. This way they can STAY HOME YET STAY CONNECTED to their doctors and healthcare providers through telehealth visits. In addition, they can stay connected to their FAMILY and FRIENDS through smartphone technologies like skype, doom, and google duo. Even more... they will have UNLIMITED DATA and can watch all the YouTube, Netflix and whatever else that they want!
No senior should ever feel forgotten or alone or disconnected from the world, especially due to the COVID19 pandemic. Now more than ever... our seniors need to know they are not forgotten and that they CAN stay connected... to family, friends and their doctors... simply through a smartphone. These smartphones WILL save lives; the most important lives of those before us... our parents, our grandparents, our loved ones who matter the most.
