Kimora's Medical Fund
Donation protected
On February 10th, 2017 my daughter Kimora Bailey came down with a bad cough.
We took her to a nearby urgent care facility where her initial cough became increasingly violent and bloody. After performing an x-ray of her chest, they noticed that she had pneumonia that completely clogged both of her lungs.
Kimora’s oxygen was too low and she had to be rushed to Overlook Hospital in New Jersey by ambulance. That night, Kimora flatlined and went into cardiac arrest. She had to be intubated and then rushed to Goryeb Children's hospital, also in New Jersey. There, Doctors noticed that Kimora was not only unable to breathe on her own, but had heart failure due to the left ventricle part of her heart being enlarged.
The doctors then told us that she had to be transferred to Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York or she would die due to the lack of equipment at Goryeb.
The transfer itself was extremely risky but thankfully Kimora just barely made it there safely. During her stay at Columbia, the doctors noticed that Kimora did not have pneumonia. Since her heart was enlarged, her lungs were congested with fluid and blood rendering her unable to breathe.
After 3 weeks in the ICU, the doctors put her on the heart transplant list and subsequently on the LVAD and RVAD (left and right ventricular assist device). This machine consisted of two mechanical pumps that were implanted into her chest to assist her weakened heart to pump blood. This device caused her to bleed a lot. She had three giant blood clots in her lungs and needed a lung flush to help her breathe. After nearly 2 weeks of being on the heart transplant list Kimora was finally gifted a heart. Her surgery was successful, and she is currently still in the ICU healing.
The new heart allowed Kimora’s lungs to heal and made her breathing finally improve. Unfortunately, Kimora is suffering from ICU delirium and withdrawal from being in the ICU for so long as well as coming off her medication, and we can only hope to get her out soon so she can enjoy her life again.
The purpose of this donation is to cover expenses that my health insurance is not able to cover, or partially cover. This includes her drug rehabilitation, Physical therapy, home schooling, and transportation fees as her new heart will need a considerable amount of time to adapt to her weakened immune system. Not only are there expenses for the recovery process, Kimora went through numerous surgeries and despite having a great health care plan for my daughter allowing her another chance to live, only a portion of the costs are covered. Unfortunately, there isn't a set amount that I may have to owe but all of the proceeds will go directly towards Kimora’s recovery process.
