In Honor of Mothers: KSLA Birth Center Fund

Tax deductible
The time is now for you to consider an investment in the beloved birth community! Why? Because #BlackBirthsMatter and so do inclusive and safe spaces for all birthing people. Please consider joining us in our fundraising efforts to bring forth the only Black-owned Birth Center in southern California...."Birth Center LA."

Hi! I’m Allegra Hill, CPM, LM, IBCLC and I’m Kimberly Durdin, CPM,LM,IBCLC, and we’re two of California's Black midwives (there's only a handful) dedicated to building the Beloved Birth Community, and we're asking for your help in creating a safe home for birth in South Los Angeles, the community we have dedicated our lives to elevating.

For years now, research has shown that the growing Black Maternal & Infant Mortality rates in the U.S. are a direct reflection of a generations-long pandemic, systemic racism and implicit bias in the healthcare system, and if you’ve been paying attention, you've seen that it has been proven that Black women’s rate of death before, during or after childbirth is 3-12x higher than white women, depending on the state we live in. We understand the complexities, violence, racism and other issues that Black, Brown and Queer communities face bringing forth children in this world.

For those that are new to the inclusive birth work model we’ve dedicated our lives to, with Black and Brown birthing people centered, let us elaborate on what we do beyond bringing your beautiful babies into this world….but first, we must extend an immense amount of gratitude to our families, friends and community members that helped us open Kindred Space LA (KSLA) two years ago. It had always been a dream of ours to take our combined decades of experience and translate it into a safe community space for new moms and parents in need of midwifery care, doula support, lactation consulting, education, support groups, enrichment, meditation and movement.

It was your support that expanded our reach and vision to train more than 200 birth workers of color and fund The Birthing People Foundation.

It is your love and continued partnership that keeps us focused on growing the Beloved Birth Community as we look to serve close to a thousand families with great joy and gratitude in the next few years and expand on our already successful programming that includes: healing circles, father + mother + partner support, low-cost lactation clinics, pelvic floor healing, mental health + breastfeeding support, anti-racism circles, trauma-informed training's, body-positive workshops, child development classes and more. We celebrate Black Breastfeeding Week each year, screen thought-provoking films, conduct baby-wearing workshops and truly listen to the needs of the community and move accordingly.

We collect and give away products for parents in need, including baby carriers, diapers & clothing on a regular basis all while creating a nurturing space where folks can “find their tribe.” We have also provided an incubator for emerging healers and leaders to hold court in our space. It has been a glorious two years!

Now, we have a “good” problem…we’ve outgrown our space! Here’s where you come in…

Our goal has always been to OPEN A BIRTH CENTER, and at the start of 2020, we began searching for a new home for KSLA that included space onsite for birth. COVID-19 has created “The Time Is Now” opportunity. To move forward in these uncertain times, we must create our next incarnation so we can continue to serve the families of LA that we love so dearly, especially now, while we as midwives and lactation consultants can provide safe care outside of the hospital.

Our support groups have all moved online and will continue to be virtual until it’s safe to gather again. In the meantime, we’ve closed our current physical location to RE-OPEN as a fully embodied Birth Center, with much more room….because for our community, it has been long overdue. Indeed, the time is NOW.

We’re humbly calling on you to help us complete our BIRTH CENTER dreams and make our services and offerings accessible to more families and people in need as we continue to expand the Beloved Birth Community. Our services have always been made available as sliding scale or free as needed (thanks to all of you!) but if we’re going to be able to serve more people in this space, we’ll need your help.

We kicked off this fundraising effort on Mother’s Day 2020 in honor of our mother’s, fore mother's and the one’s who have birthed us and/or raised us, while also celebrating the ultimate Mother, our home, Mother Earth and all of her children. We’re beyond grateful for the support we’ve received thus far!

We would be honored to receive your tax-deductible donation today, to honor you or the mother’s surrounding you, or to perhaps honor YOUR Mother, as we look to hold space in our space and embrace all who are on varying journeys into motherhood.
