Help Send Me To The Dem Convention!

Fellow Progressives,

My name is Kristi Lara. I was elected as a National Delegate from TX to represent Bernie Sanders at this year's Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. This will be my first time attending a convention as an "official delegate". I am asking for your help to fund my trip to the DNC.  As many of you know, going as an "official delegate" is extremely expensive. Political participation at this level is often limited for those of us who are in the 99%. Our DNC assigned hotel room is over $500 a night. Many of us are sharing rooms to cut down on expenses. This does not include our flight or food.   We will be in Philadelphia for 5 days.

This year I will be attending the DNC in honor of Ms. Fannie Lou Hamer and all civil rights activists who stood up  to the DNC in 1964.

Fannie Lou Hamer - stood up to the DNC and fought vigorously alongside Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) lunch counter protestors and the  Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (MFDP) against segregation.  Ms. Hamer helped give me the inspiration to follow Bernie to the DNC. I believe our work now is a continuation of their work. We are standing up for what we believe in. We are demanding justice for all Americans regardless of race or class; not just for the millionaires and billionaires.

In  the early sixties, Bernie was a civil rights activists and  member of the Congress for Racial Equality (CORE) and SNCC. Bernie was arrested for protesting  segregation. He walked across the bridge in Selma with Dr. Martin Luther King and attended the March on Washington to fight for justice, end systematic poverty, and fight for good jobs and fair wages for every American.  As progressives, we still have so much more work to do to achieve Economic Justice, Social Justice, Racial Justice, and Environmental Justice.

I will go to the convention this year to stand not only with Bernie, but with every progressive fighting for justice.

Politcal and Social Activism

My Journey with Bernie materialized in 2011 with the Occupy movement. Like millions of Americans, I became an active organizer and supporter of Occupy Wall Street. I traveled to New York to sleep out on Wall Street. For almost 2 months, I maintained an Occupy tent here in Dallas in protest of a system that I knew denied millions of Americans access to Economic, Social, Racial and Environmental Justice.  Since then, I have dedicated my life to helping change a system that perpetuates injustices upon "the least among us."

OWS activists worked tirelessly to educate the public about breaking up the big banks, student loan debt, race and class discrimination, and getting money out of politics.

The pursuit of Economic and Social Justice is a calling that I do not take lightly.  Bernie Sanders is the only candidate who has unequivocally brought our progressive message to millions of Americans.

I do the work it takes to help spread the progressive message and increase Democratic voter participation.

As a political activist, I have worked tirelessly to help organize voters in pre-primary, post-primary, and post-local conventions here in Texas, and in 10 other states. My national phone bank and field work has included KS, KY, WY, CO, CA, MN, TX, VA, NM, and FL.

As a volunteer, I block-walked and phone-banked for Bernie pre-primary and pre-convention in Far North Dallas and Collin County. I organized a Bernie Sanders welcome table at the Collin County Convention.  Dallas Bernie Sanders Campaign staff also helped me organize a caucus effort in Colorado Springs, CO. Bernie won that caucus by almost 70%! It was a great early win for Bernie!

After the Colorado primary, I did substantial planning and organizing in Wyoming, working with Wyoming University Students for Bernie Sanders. We had very successful voter outreach, registration, and organizing efforts which culminated with the Wyoming Sanders Rally. As you can tell, it's been a very busy year for this activist!

Because of all of my primary work organizing for Bernie, I was humbled and honored by my appointment as the Official SD 8 Chair for the TX Bernie Sanders Campaign.

As a political activist, I worked tirelessly to help create a progressive majority. Now I am asking for your help to get me to the DNC.

Until Bernie came along, I never felt inspired enough to try for an "Official" Delegate Position; but I have always worked to spread a progressive message. I was previously involved in the Democratic Party process--as Co-chair and Field Organizer for Rockwall for Obama 2008. I also attended the DNC in 08' as a volunteer,  and was awarded with a credential pass for the final days of the convention.

While in attendance, I caucused with the Progressive Democrats of America  (a group that helped get Bernie to run), organized with Move-On , and Code Pink Women for Peace . I continued to work with these groups long after the convention.

Post Occupy, I worked with Sierra Club  activists in Dallas to get a ban placed on a fracking site near a DISD public school and as an education candidate to help stop privatization efforts of public schools. I helped support and organize many Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP), Our Walmart, End Citizens United and  #FightFor15  demonstrations.  I also sat in the Senate Gallery with Wendy Davis and the Orange Army,  standing up for Planned Parenthood.

I was a founding member of Dallas' Mothers Against Police Brutality (MAPB) and have  worked diligently to end systematic racial discrimination.  As a member of MAPB, I helped organize demonstrations and actions where thousands were in attendance.

This year, I am working to bring Bernie's message home. I am continuing my efforts to help End Mass  Incarceration and Decriminalize Marijuana  possession. I am also currently helping three progressive candidates here in Collin County and two candidates in Dallas.

Why am I asking for your support?

I am a committed Democratic Activist and Political Organizer. My commitment has been unending; through thick and thin. I truly believe that this is not about me, but about us. I intend to continue our fight through the 2018 and 2020 election cycles. I can promise you that your investment in me as a national delegate will not be wasted. Our message is too important to let it go by the wayside. As a strong progressive, I intend to fight for our message for the rest of my life.

I hope to make you proud by representing Democratic Progressives for Bernie Sanders at the National level! I would be extremely thankful for any and all contributions made to help me Stand for Economic, Racial, Social and Environmental Justice!
