Donate to Help commemorate Kurt Hendrick

This past weekend, we lost one of the greatest teammates Marquette Lacrosse has ever known. Amid battling a terminal illness, Kurt Hendricks joined our program this past April. Despite living an hour from campus, he found a way to be a constant presence at practice, team meals, and our end of year banquet. Kurt quickly became a beloved teammate and forged a personal bond with every one of his teammates. Kurt embodied everything Marquette Lacrosse aspires to be - humility, toughness, selflessness, positivity, and approached his daily battle with a smile. He had a contagious personality; Kurt was witty and knew how to work a room. Whether on the field or in the office, he was a constant light.
One of the staff’s most cherished moments with Kurt came while eating lunch at Chick-Fil-A this past June. After we finished eating, and we got Kurt’s critical review of his meal (he had never been before and had a strong bias towards Popeyes), Coach Richard pivoted the conversation and asked him a question, “Kurt, what has been the toughest part of battling your illness?” In typical Kurt fashion, he took a long pause before answering - he was always very thoughtful and pointed with his words. Finally, with a deep level of grief in his voice he answered, “The toughest part has been seeing how it has affected the lives of people around me (and he nodded his head towards his mom, Erin). Seeing the burden it has been on the people I love is the toughest part.”
In his answer, the selflessness and sweetness of Kurt’s heart was on full display. There are many people who tell us how to live our lives, but the most impactful ones just show us what it looks like. Kurt never gave us any advice - only an example. We are forever grateful to have known such a special teammate, and we grieve alongside his mother, Erin, and his brother Van Luke. The way these two loved and served Kurt was an inspiration to us all.
