Help Look2Justice fundraise so we are able to continue this important work!
Look2Justice (L2J) is a grassroots organization of system-impacted organizers working to cultivate justice, fairness, and accountability in Washington State's criminal legal system through research, public education, and advocacy that leads with racial equity. We seek to uplift the voices of those impacted by the system and empower them to make positive change in their communities. We operate on an inside-out organizing model, meaning the direction of our organization is led by currently and formerly incarcerated organizers working in concert with outside organizers and researchers.
This year, we saw the success of our first campaign, The Chance Campaign for Youth Justice, a campaign designed by incarcerated people. Because of the success of our campaign, people entering the criminal legal system in Washington State will no longer automatically receive longer sentences if they have prior juvenile convictions. Approximately 18% of all people entering the criminal legal system annually will receive shorter sentences.
OTHER KEY AREAS PROGRAMS ARE:
* CIVIC EDUCATION: peer-led civic education workshops for system-impacted people who want to participate in the political process. Ran both inside of prisons by our lead organizers, and outside in the community by the formally incarcerated and family members of incarcerated people.
Chance Campaign for Justice: Decarceration-centered campaign designed by incarcerated organizers.
* INSIDE-OUT POLICY NEWSLETTER: Provided to over 1,300 incarcerated people across the state. Keeping the most impacted people up-to-date with information related to legislative bills and new court decisions.
* LEAD ORGANIZER PROGRAM: To further our base-building efforts and ensure rapid dissemination of information to our inside population, we hired lead organizers in each of the main prisons across the state and pay them $25/hour for their work.
* SYSTEM ACTORS EDUCATION: Workshops for superior court judges across the state facilitated by formerly incarcerated people with input from incarcerated leaders.
* ANNUAL SYMPOSIUM: Attendees are typically system actors such as legislators, prosecutors, judges, legal aid organizations, and community members. The event is designed and hosted by incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people.
Please help us in continuing to do this work. We know that everyone cannot be on the front line of the work we are doing, but you can help us support those of us who are. We want to continue to pay the most impacted for the work they do in this space, and with your support we can.
The movement for criminal justice reform in Washington State is stronger than it has ever been because we are leading with those most impacted. Our 2024 campaigns will build on the victories of this year and the momentum we've built over the last few years. We will continue to build from and within the impacted communities who experience the harms of the carceral system first hand -- as we continue to educate to liberate.
