LIVING with ALS - Rodler Family Fundraiser

Don't stop living.

After many months of progressive muscle weakness and difficulty walking Micah was diagnosed with ALS in October.

See this link for more information about ALS. http://www.alsa.org/about-als/facts-you-should-know.html

The ALS Association estimates that the average cost annually for expenses related to the diagnosis of ALS is $200,000. After breaking down the various expenses and running the numbers, Micah and his family see that this estimate is unfortunately accurate.

As many of you who know Micah are aware, his love for his family abounds and aside from his family little gives him more joy than the pursuit of outdoor adventure with family and friends.

Micah is now physically disabled, restricted to a wheel chair, but his spirit is strong and he is determined not to give ALS an inch with out a fight. To that end, Micah is seeking your help in his fight against ALS.

In an effort to demonstrate his gratitude and determination, Micah is planning a Roll-a-thon, and hopes you will join him. Micah will be rolling in his powered wheelchair from the lighthouse in Santa Cruz to the promenade in Capitola. Join us by bicycle, foot or your own mobility device! This event is intended to raise awareness for ALS and raise funds directly for Micah, his family and research for a cure for ALS.

Roll-a-thon on January 12, 2020 at 1pm. Meeting at the lighthouse on West Cliff drive in Santa Cruz.

Zelda's on The Beach - Rodler Family Fundraiser. The owners of this fine establishment have graciously agreed to host a fundraiser for the Rodlers. 20% of their proceeds on January 13th 2020 will be given to the Rodlers. Please join us for great food and good company.  This event starts at 5pm on Monday, January 13th, 2020.

Five percent to fight back: Micah and his family are so very grateful. Grateful for the community members, friends, family, coworkers and the Masonic community for all of the support they've already received. A bright light during these life-changing times has continued to be the generous support Micah and his family has received. As such, Micah and his family feel that it is necessary to pass along this generosity, by donating 5% of all donations made to this GoFundMe page. 5% of all donations to this GoFundMe page will be passed along to the ALS Association specifically for the purposes of researching a cure for ALS.

Micah and his family are facing mounting financial expenses related to this diagnosis. Micah needs assistance in his home and those costs will be significant. Additional costs include household equipment, communication, transportation and mobility equipment. Micah has had to resign from his long term position with Myles F. Corcoran Construction Consulting, inc due to his disabilities, which obviously has reduced his income. Micah projects his expenses resulting from his diagnosis for one year to include: Handicap van - $42,000 In home care - $75,000 Home automation - $2,000 Supplements and alternative therapy's - $6,000 Brain training and communication - $1,900 Terrain Hopper - $25,000 In home equipment $12,000.00

ALS is known to be a rapidly progressing and debilitating disease, Micah remains determined to resist it by all means possible.  Micah has: begun two treatments known to slow the progression of the disease; remained optimistic and determined, adjusted his diet, researched and started taking appropriate supplements, continued with physical therapy, developed a regiment of mental exercises and is in line for trials of new treatments for ALS .

In the spirit of adventure Micah hopes to raise enough funds to acquire an all-terrain wheelchair, called a terrain hopper. https://www.terrainhopperusa.com This device will allow Micah to continue to adventure with his family. From Micah's perspective sharing adventures and experiences with his family is what life is truly all about.

If Micah is able to raise enough funds to acquire a Terrain Hopper, it will be made available for others in this community who are disabled and would benefit from the joy of exploring nature.

If you are unable to contribute to this effort financially, we hope you can join Micah for the Roll-a-thon to show your support for Micah and the fight against ALS or join us at Zelda's on January 13th 2020.

Micah's goal is simple: Do not stop living. Living to share the love, living to be a contribution to a community, living for the pursuit of joy and adventure and living to win the fight against ALS.

How, is the beauty of a river.
It’s those who’ve been down it before us.
The same river, on different water.
Who’ve seen the bends, the ridges and the cliffs.
Who’ve seen the boils, the riffles and the waves.
How, they are, with you, while they're not.
