Qua's Service Trip To South Africa

Hello everyone! My name is Laquasia LeGrand and I am a junior at George Mason University majoring in Accounting with a completed minor in Nonprofit Management.  Growing up, it was hard for me see the importance of giving back.  I was blinded by the “impact” others had on me.  It wasn’t until my first job where I realized the importance of impacting change. As a summer apprentice worker at an elementary school in Brooklyn, NY, I was able to engage in conversations with students that all had very unique stories.  The challenges  my students faced at the ages 5-10 included sexual assault, physical/emotional abuse, and food scarcity.  At the age of 14, my only solution was listening and being a source of security that my students could confide in.  Currently, at the age of 20, I have the opportunity to do hands on work with students facing the same challenges in Cape Town, South Africa for 4 weeks this summer.

One Heart Source , is a nonprofit organization ((501-(C)(3)) geared towards creating communities within marginalized populations in Tanzania, Jamaica and South Africa to promote eliminating the gap between those who have access to resources and those who don’t.  As a volunteer, I will work as an academic mentor to foster an environment where students can thrive academically, personally and creatively.  I am excited for this unique opportunity to make an impact in the world, and will greatly appreciate any donations toward the program fee and airfare.  Any donation whether big or small can help me impact change.  Thank you!
