Lety's Medical Costs

Donation protected
Please support my friend Lety Quiroz in her time of need.
Right before Thanksgiving, Lety went to a podiatrist to check on what was thought to be an issue with her foot. After the visit, the podiatrist set up a nerve test to further investigate the reason for the pain, cramps, and loss of strength in Lety’s foot and leg. After 1 ½ weeks of fighting with the insurance company, the nerve test appointment was approved and completed on DEC 4th. The test showed evidence of nerve damage, which stemmed from Lety’s back. On DEC 7th, the family was notified that dad’s employment and family medical benefits were going to end on DEC 18th.
After more back and forth with the insurance company, a MRI was completed and a visit was made to a spine specialist. After reviewing the MRI, the spine specialist confirmed that the issue was not a pinched nerve, but something much more serious. There was a mass/tumor visible on the spine, which was causing the nerve issues. The spine specialist ordered a 2nd MRI with contrast in hopes of getting a clearer picture of where the tumor was located. Then Lety was sent to UT Southwestern to see a set of specific doctors that have expertise in this area. On DEC 16th, Lety’s birthday, she received confirmation from her newest doctor that she would need surgery as soon as possible to remove the mass, a nerve tumor called a Schwannoma. The tumor was sitting inside the spinal sack, still unsure if it was on top or infused in the spinal cord. If left unattended, the tumor would eventually cause paralysis. The doctor was very understanding of the insurance situation and quickly made room for the surgery. The procedure was a success; completed on DEC 28th and so far, with no further damage to Lety’s spinal cord or nerves.
The family had to continue health coverage via COBRA, which is very expensive but it was the only way to insure that the procedure would be covered. They also have to pay for 5 additional months of COBRA to ensure that all follow ups and medications will be covered. The family needs help to cover the insurance cost while dad looks for a new job and while Lety recovers from the surgery.
One month of COBRA coverage is around $1,330. Our goal is to help raise the monthly cost as the months pass, not the whole five months at one time.
