Keeping shelter fund

Hello,

My name is Lizette Serrano and I was born with scoliosis although I had no idea of how much my life would change as a result of this disease. My childhood was fairly normal until Scoliosis began at age 12. By 15 I  had my first surgery with a spinal fusion. At 17, some of the hardward had broken and I was in for my second surgery to repair the damage. At 19 one of the pins in my back holding 2 rods together broke off and entered my chest cavity causing me to have another surgery to remove the "forgeign object."
Over the last 3 years, the pain in my back began to grow, and it turned out those same 2 rods had now broken along with a collapsed disk at S1 requiring another spinal fusion and correction. This time they fused my spine to my hips for added stability but limiting my movement. On top of this, I was in ICU for 18 days with what they thought was cerebral menegitis, raging fevers and a blood clot in my lung.  The surgeon also damaged the nerves down my legs, but decided not to tell me. After 3 months and several different doctors, a neurologist finally gave me the news and I have since had debilitating pain down my left leg and numbness in my leg and foot that causes me to twist my ankle frequently.

I am a social worker for the homeless in New York city and try to help place them into shelter. I had to be out of work for 4 months after my surgery on July 2016 and was not receiving nearly enough in disability benefits to cover my bills and rent, which forced me back into work before I was fully recovered. My mother passed away in 2013 at 59 from unfortunate events. She was the glue that held everyone together. My grandfather passed away the following year and my baby sister now has a family of her own. Although my friends and cousins have been a great support it has been a tough few years. I live alone but everyday I'm that much stronger and I hope to continue reaching my goals though the battle isn't over. I am now being told I have arthritis that has developed in my knees (which are also mildly deformed as a result of the scoliosis) that the doctors say will require replacing soon.Right now, with student loan debt pilling up, I am struggling to clear up the credit card debt I had accumulated during my recovery to pay for my medical costs not covered by my insurance and now the hospital is charging me for the 20 days of services they provided.

I appreciate all the support and help I received in trying to clear up my medical bills. I was able to fight NYU to reduce the massive balance. I am now out of work once again due to the chronic pain and have no income. I am asking if anyone could please help me pay my rent for the month so that I am one month closer to obtaining some income.

Thank you for taking the time to read this!
