Blanket Drive for the Homeless
Donation protected
My name is NaShauni Ponton and I am currently a Senior at Emmanuel College in Boston, MA. The winter months take a great toll on the homeless in Boston. We have the privilege of having a home to live in, food to eat, and clothes to wear. These are things we take for granted but are cherished by those less fortunate. During these cold winter days and nights, my heart goes out to those who cannot say the same. It truly saddens me to think of and see the homeless people walking the streets and sleeping on street corners anytime; especially during the winter season.
On December 16, 2013, Boston Public Health Commission conducted the city of Boston’s 34th Annual Homeless Census. This census highlighted the grave issue of homelessness in Boston and Massachusetts as a whole. According to the 2013 census, there are 19,029 homeless people living in the state of Massachusetts with 7,255 of them living in Boston. Of the 7,255 living in Boston, 180 are living on the streets.
Homeless and emergency shelters are doing their best to house these individuals during the brutally cold winter months, but those who live on the streets are struggling to survive in negative degree weather. Temperatures have plummeted below zero this week alone! Not to mention, some individuals die from hypothermia during these harsh conditions. I was always taught to help, support, and provide for those less fortunate. As Samaritans, I ask that all of us look out for, love and care for our neighbors during these winter months.
After communicating with a friend, we decided to create a Homeless Blanket Drive! We have reached out to the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless and MAMBEBLANKETS.com and have partnered with them for this cause to purchase “Mambe Extreme Blankets”. These blankets are extremely warm and can act as a shield from the potentially life-threatening cold air. At $139.00 per blanket, we NEED YOU!
Friends, family, and colleagues that I have had the pleasure of connecting with, I’d like to reach out to you all for help and support in raising funds for the blanket drive. If it is in your heart, we are taking donations of any kind! Anything helps.
Thank you in advance for taking the time out of your day to read and contribute to helping those who are less fortunate! It is greatly appreciated! Have a blessed day!

*We are looking to purchase the blankets the first week of February. Everyone deserves to be warm and these blankets will last them a lifetime. Thanks so much!*
