Lucas and his battle with Cystic Fibrosis

Meet Lucas my 3 year old nephew. Him and his mummy Lucy, my sister, are in the ICU in London Brompton hospital and are about to go into their third week of admission with currently no end in sight. They are there due to a very serious flare up of a disease Lucas was born with, Cystic Fibrosis.
For those that don’t know, Cystic Fibrosis is a condition where the lungs and digestive system get clogged with thick mucus. This can cause serious issues with breathing and digestion and over time the increasing damage to the lungs can cause them to stop working properly. There is currently no cure and Lucas will suffer for the rest of his life.
A regular day in the life of Lucas sees him taking multiple kinds of medication, strict physio regimes and the use of many medical machines.
A long hospital stay isn’t unusual for these two as his lowered immune system means he gets seriously unwell very easily. Although they take it in their stride it really does take a toll mentally and physically. As you can see from the photos he continues to smile through the pain, everyone who meets Lucas instantly falls in love with his character. He really is the epitome of bravery and strength and that comes from none other than his mummy Lucy. Lucy is a single mother and the way she cares for Lucas is second to none. Like many CF parents Lucy was unaware of the disease until she had Lucas and has had to learn on the job ever since. Being a parent of a CF child means Lucys full time job is being Lucas’s carer.
Today the average life span for people with cystic fibrosis who live to adulthood is about 44 years. Time is precious for the both of them and they deserve the best out of life.
As a family we have started a go fund me page in the hopes to give them both something to look forward to when they eventually come out of hospital. We hope to be able to take Lucas and Lucy on the holiday they deserve. Any donation is greatly appreciated thank you for taking the time to read this.
