Luther Wamble's Last Gig..

Luther Wamble was an amazing guitar player and human being... His passing leaves a hole the size of the Grand Canyon in the local music world. Luther could play... yes he could, and with so many fine musicians over the years... Gate Mouth Brown for many years, Mickey Newbury, and one night many years ago with Towns Van Zandt at the Flora-Bama, until the blood ran from the fingers of his fret hand... That's just a start of the many stories & stages Blu Lu Wamble stood on or the folks he played with... There'll never be another Luther, never...
Now, our friend Luther has moved on to the other side, and like a lot of Blues Men, born and steeped in the music, Luther lived the Blues... He wore it heavy in his heart and played it out to the world through his amazing talent with a guitar. No one had a tone for the musical story like Luther did, you could hear him from a block away and know that rift was Lu, and he was in the house... But, like a Blues Man can sometimes be, he lived hard, he played the guitar from a place way down deep in his soul, and he never much had a dime in his pocket... And if he did, if someone else needed it, Lu would give that last dime away...
Luther's burial plan was not a plan.. He lived through so much, almost died so many times, he was never ready to leave us... He just loved playing for us all, and the ending was not something he really wanted to think about...
We're raising funds to cremate Luther and help out his wife Charlton with some of his medical bills, afterwhich we plan to have one amazing wake and memorial for Lu. He was an important member of our local musical family, Mobile's own son, and one of it's finest guitar players..
The above clip is of Luther playing with his friend Will Kimbrough one night at The Frog Pond.. The song was "Soulfully", and Lu played it just like that.. soulfully...
