MOMUCLAA is a feminist non-profit organization led by women in Honduras on the outskirts of López and Aledanos in the northern part of the country, Choloma. This non-profit organization was founded in 1992 by Virginia Marta Velásquez who was awarded the Hillary Rodham Clinton Award for Advancing Women in Peace and Security, among other women and volunteers to promote equal rights for women, motivated by the high levels of domestic violence and femicide that they experience on a daily basis.
MOMUCLAA has been actively working to combat femicides, working primarily to defend and validate the rights of women in Choloma, Honduras, a country that is among the most violent countries in the world; where the average woman is raped, tortured, and murdered every thirty-six hours (if not, more often).
The day-to-day life of the current director, Melania Reyes consists of much more than just being a leader, with the lack of resources her multiple roles consist of being a forensic specialist, a trauma psychologist, and a conflict mediator between local gangs and the women and children seeking aid and refuge. A few words from our director, Melania Reyes: "Feminist organizations are the ones that are constantly pressing for a change to achieve a transformation of these bile crimes against women and children. We, women, are human beings, someone's daughter, someone's sister, someone's beloved, WE ARE SOMEONE, not no one ”.
MOMUCLAA provides constant aid to all group classes from children, youth, to older adults, as well as to the LGBTTQQIAAP+ community, in educational needs, food resources, recreational workshops, and most importantly and primarily in the fights against femicides and domestic violence by helping the victims in filing complaints and persuing legal lawsuits against their abusers and related gangs.
Now more than ever this feminist nonprofit organization has become instrumental in helping the thousands of women and children in desperate need of legal help, refugee, and representation, among many more needs. Currently, MOMUCLAA provides the essential resources for day-to-day life, housing, medical needs, funeral costs, mental counseling, legal assistance, food resources, and whatever else is received from donations. MOMUCLAA volunteers are constantly working to provide "to-go bags" to all who urgently need them.
We can proudly announce that as a leading organization we have been able to reallocate and save more than 176 women seeking refuge and have been able to settle in a safe place together with their children. In addition, we are disrupting the pattern of violence against our youth through our community outreach. We are working to break free of the macho-based culture, speaking up for the voiceless and giving them the rightful stand to their human rights.
Every penny will make a difference for this community, for our women who desperately need resources and funding. For all those who helped spread this message or on a monetary aspect, we cannot thank you enough.
