Making school lunch-time safer in Florida
Hi, my name is Lila and I go to middle school in Florida. You may have seen me on TV advocating for a mask mandate in schools, but now I am asking for your help to make my school, and schools in my community, safer from COVID by providing outdoor seating for our lunch periods.
While I am excited to be back to school in-person, lunch is a scary time. Every day there are over 100 unmasked students, often more than 20 per table, all trying to eat and be kids at the same time. There is no social distancing and no way to spread out.
With the Delta variant of COVID-19 surging in our community, and the local hospitals filled with Covid patients, including an increasing number of kids, I have been asking for permission to eat lunch outside where it is safer. My principal wants to help but says my school doesn't have the tables or the funds to allow that.
To help my school provide a safer place for students to enjoy lunch, I am raising money to purchase outdoor lunch tables. These tables will help me and other students who are concerned about getting sick, and spreading the virus, feel safer at school and allow us to enjoy our lunchtime together. My principal told me that there is room for tables if they can be donated. Thanks for your help!
*Any excess funds will go to providing outside seating for other schools in the area that are effected by the current surge in cases.
