“We don’t want Satan’s music”
This statement, declared by an Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb ‘AQIM’ spokesman, sets the tone for the Islamist oppression of music, art and football occurring in Mali.
As the country of Mali is being ravaged by not only Islamists, but also COVID-19’s economic standstill, we are setting up this emergency fund to assist the musicians of Mali who are fleeing persecution.
Here you can watch a short clip from Mali Blues, explaining what it is like to be a musician in Mali at the moment:

We want to support their livelihoods and basic needs like hygiene products, solar energy and hygiene products, create opportunities and platforms for collaboration and diversification of revenue streams.
Want to see what sort of music has been invented in the past as a result of cross-cultural musical collaboration?
Just look at Felafels Kuti’s Afrocubanism, Tokyo’s 80’s Citypop and even this July Disclosure has released a song collaborating with Malian artist Fatoumata Diawara.

**UPDATE**
Dear donors,
Almost a year after this crowdfunding campaign, you must wonder what your money went towards.
So, where did the first 800 Euros go?
Here’s a list:
- 250W PV solar panel system for village to cultivate gardening operation.
- Artisan materials for the making of Koras (The craftsmen have produced 14 Koras and are now looking for clientele globally - check out the instagram page @malimusiccenter).
- School fees and materials for 10 children of music refugees.
- Hygiene products for music refugees.
- Donation to poor wife of Griot musician Kassé Mady Diabaté following his death.
- Mosque donation for the elderly.
- Building materials for a hen house.
- 15 USD went to promoting the instagram page.
This goes to show how far we can go with just a little bit of funding. If we are to sell the 14 Koras, with average profit after overheads of around 250 USD per Kora, we would be looking at over 3500 Euros which would ENTIRELY go to the promotion of music refugees’ work and their music as we continue to build on this project.
Also please let us know if you are interested in buying a Kora, a Ngoni, a Calebash (round drum) or a Tama (talking drum), since we have also set up shipping routes globally.
Next up, we will be looking to gather donations which will be used for our overarching goal of setting up Kamu Musique, an online music community for Malian musicians to find musicians to collaborate with, organise and hold online Kora lessons as well as present their work.
Much love,
Hima Abed, Franziska Golenhofen, Toumani Diabate, Idrissa Coulibaly
