Manhattan Bridges is an award-winning dual language high school in Manhattan, New York. We were founded in 2003 on the belief that mastery of communication skills in both English and the student’s native language is crucial to realizing a student’s potential in a multicultural society.

Most of the students who enter the school have been in the country for less than three years and are working hard to learn English and prepare for college. They live in high poverty and often come to us with huge gaps in their academics. However, we view both their native language and technology as tools to overcome that. Students develop their communication skills in both languages. We have a graduation rate of 94.3% and our students go on to city and state colleges and universities like Cornell, Fordham, NYU, Barnard and Bard.

Our school culture is based on setting high expectations, providing individualized instruction, and treating our kids with respect. In fact, a state survey in 2015 confirmed that 97% of students say our teachers treat them with respect. We are a family.

Part of our success is because we don’t limit students based on their abilities, or lower expectations for what they should be able to produce. Rather, we scaffold instruction and provide support so they meet the academic expectations, and we hope to use the Chromebooks to implement more support.

As each student progresses through our program and gaps in academics are identified, we constantly ask, “How can we help this student?” Right now, one answer is to provide more technology. Since most of our students don’t have access to technology at home, we seek to start a loan program where students can take Chromebooks home to work on:

 - Individualized lessons
 - Presentations, typed reports and research projects  - required of all students
 - Researching and applying to colleges
 - College classes (our students can take college-level classes here at the school and earn credits)
 - Google classrooms

In addition, we also have a parent academy where we teach parents how to use computers. In our Parent Academy, parents have an opportunity to learn how to use the computer, log on to the online gradebook and monitor their child’s academic progress.

“I am proud of the effort our students, teachers and staff put in. No one is allowed to fail. Students have to succeed and it’s our job to get them there.” - Principal Mirza Sanchez-Medina

Your support will allow us to continue supporting our bilingual students. Please donate or share this campaign to Facebook so we can continue to open doors for them to reach their fullest potential!
