Sewing Masks for a Safe Chicago is a charitable effort that is producing high-quality cotton face masks that are being donated to Chicagoans most in need while providing work for seamstresses and tailors during this unprecedented crisis.
Sewing Masks for a Safe Chicago is coordinating with the City of Chicago and civic leaders to deliver masks to frontline healthcare workers, emergency first responders, homeless shelters, food pantries, and other organizations in greatest need.
100% of funds raised go directly to the production and distribution of the masks, and all donations are tax deductible thanks to a partnership with the Chicago Association of Veterans of World War II. Tanya and Michael Polsky matched dollar-for-dollar the first $100,000 raised through this campaign.
Sewing Masks for a Safe Chicago is a women-led effort that started with a text chain of moms. Dr. Rohinee Beri, a healthcare provider working on the frontline of the coronavirus crisis, put a simple question to her friends: "Can you help?" Fellow moms who helped get the effort off the ground include Tanya Polsky, Kimberly Vender Moffat, Sonal Gandhi and Anita Shastri. And Tanya’s friend Tanya Lukatskaya, of Joe and Harvey’s European Tailors, has organized the incredible team sewing the masks. See more of the story here: See the story on CBS Local
Sewing Masks for a Safe Chicago has already distributed masks to organizations including:
· Chicago Police Department
· City of Chicago Dep. of Family and Support Services
· UIC Homeless Project
· Boulevard of Chicago homeless shelter
· The Night Ministry
· Misericordia Heart of Mercy
· Holocaust Community Services
· Iglesia Evangelica Emmanuel
· Muslim Action Network
· Advocate Christ Medical Center
· Edward-Elmhurst Health
· The Jesse Brown VA Hospital
· NorthShore University HealthSystem
· The University of Chicago Hospital
We have been on the phones and on emails day-in and day-out hearing directly from Chicagoans on the front lines of the coronavirus fight. They need help and protection as fast as it can get there, and when it arrives, they have been so grateful. On their behalf we’re asking, can you help?
Thank you for your generosity and stay safe!
