August 21, 2019: I wanted to tell everyone that the money came in really handy! It defintely has been helping with the financial stressors and medical costs. We not only had to pay for Trixie's emergency surgery, we ended up having to have Jake put down as well. The medications are crazy and not all are covered by insurance. I am taking 17 pills a day. I am getting close on my card that I put all my medical expenses on, so having this money to take care of copays has been a godsend. We are so humbled and blessed by all the love shown! I am looking forward to coming back and seeing everyone when this is over! -- Melinda
7/3/19 Update: Amazing! Another great day of support for Melinda. Everyone's generosity is very heart warming. We'll keep the site up through September if others are interested in supporting Melinda along the way. Melinda has had several chemo sessions already and will undergo another 9 sessions. She's thankful for your support as it will help cover the co-pays for some very expensive medications right now. These funds will also help to cover dental work that she needs which is caused by the chemo treatments. She's waiting for a tumor marker test result at this time and is expecting to have an MRI or PET scan of the liver at the end of July. When she's ready for surgery, to remove the tumor(s) on her liver, the procedure will be done at UCSF. Your generous support will help cover lodging costs for her husband to stay close by while she recovers at the hospital.
Melinda is very appreciative of all your support. I also want to thank everyone for your caring and supportive spirit.
7/2/19 Update: Wow! Melinda has a great support system for sure. Her generous community of family, friends, and colleagues have just about met the initial $2,000 goal in under 24hrs. THANK YOU!! As Melinda expects to continue her battle for the remainder of the year, and continued unexpected medical expenses will arise as well as the need for financial stress relief as she's currently on medical leave until next year, we have increased her goal to $3,000. YOUR GENEROSITY IS OVERWHELMING!
Our friend and colleague, Melinda Meeker was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer this past Spring which has metastasized to her liver. She went through emergency surgery in April to clear a blockage in her colon. She has been and will continue to undergo chemotherapy treatments to reduce the mass that’s currently attached to her liver.
Melinda has had a challenging time dealing with the chemo treatments. At the end of the summer, they are expecting to do another surgery to remove this mass. It’s expected that she’ll be on a medical leave and off work until January 2020.
Melinda has been a great colleague at work. She’s hard working and is as I describe; the glue that holds us together. We have looked to Melinda for guidance as we’ve gone through our own struggles in our work and/or personal lives. I often hear about how she supports others in her large circle of family, friends, and church family as well.
Melinda has been blessed with many wonderful family and friends who have supported her through this challenging time in her life. Some have dropped off meals for her and her family; have provided rides to and from appointments; have donated vacation time; and many have offered thoughts and prayers. When Melinda was first diagnosed, numerous people expressed their interest in contributing towards a gift for her. Some wanted to contribute towards a vacation fund for when Melinda was feeling better or for her to attend her college graduation commencement. Others knew she’d have medical and related expenses that she’d need help with during this long journey. Any donation is welcome. No amount is too small.
She has always been there for us, now it’s our chance to be there for her. Melinda will be able to use the funds as she needs for medical costs, financial stress relief, and for things that will help lift her spirits.
