The Miami Nation of Indiana is one of the main tribes that inhabited present day Indiana. We illegally had our Federal Recognition taken away in 1897 by the state and to this day are fighting to regain it. This has been an ongoing fight that we have recently made very positive strides towards our goal. The process for recognition is costly due to attorney fees, required social and historical studies, and more.
Our tribal complex in Peru Indiana is on the National Historic Registry and is home to our offices and archives that contain some tribal documents and items that are over 200 years old! Along with that, we utilize the building to house our museum that opens soon, an emergency shelter for all residents of Miami County, host an Alcoholics Anonymous chapter, and rent out the facilities to the public for wedding receptions, class reunions, and more! Due to Covid and changes to the economic environment around Peru, tribal income has dropped. Since we don't receive Federal money, we need help in making much needed repairs and maintaining the Tribal complex which is 83 years old! Won't you please help the Miami Nation of Indiana preserve our culture and heritage as well as save a historic building?
"Great news! In August of this year (2023) the Tribe was awarded a $25,000 grant to assist with the preservation of the tribal center in Peru, BUT we have to match it 1:1. We can only receive as much as we can match. Right now is the best time for you to help support the tribe's complex which greatly supports our community's culture. Every $1 you donate becomes $2!
Please consider making your tax deductible contribution now that will help us offset costs for Federal Recognition and match the $25,000 grant!!
